I just got one of the short black ka bars from Wholesale Hunter (and they are great, by the way). I wasn't too impressed when I received it; as noted in other threads, its not just shorter, its like the mini-me of a regular ka bar. The handle seemed cramped and the thick short blade didn't feel like it would have the best cutting properties.

It didn't "feel" real sharp out of the box, but after shaving some hair and cutting the cr*p out of my forearm, I had to admit it was. Then I used it to open some boxes and break down boxes and then cut up some chicken. It worked extremely well! Not that I would ever use the original Ka Bar USMC for that, but its smaller size was very handy and its relatively thick blade made short work of those awful clamshell plastic packages.

I don't know that it did these jobs any "better" than my sharpfinger, but it worked very well and I'm glad to have it.

It probobly didnt feel shap because there wasnt a burr, many people mistate that with being sharp.

I love my full size USMC. It isnt the best but a great deal for the money and its a classic - a must have, IMO.

I have been looking to buying a short black Ka-Bar. Need somthing smaller than my full size KA-BAR. Been looking at the Cold Steel SRK as well.

Ive had my Kabar for a while know and love it good all around knife.

When I was using mine in the snow the handle started to flake after I droped it not a big problem just dried it of other than that an outstanding knife.

Thinking of getting a Swamp Rat Too, but most likely I will stick with the Kabar

I bought the short Kabar but sold it later. I was hoping for a Kabar with a shorter blade, but not reduced handle and guard size. A name like "Mini Kabar" would have been more appropriate for for this "short Kabar".

If you want a knife similar to a Kabar but with a five inch blade, go with the Camillus Pilot Survival Knife. It has an adequately proportioned handle and guard.
