well, to give a short summary in advance, it seems like it was not meant to be.
I ordered the steak knife from their German retailer: http://www.messerdepot.de/product/1...eu-2015:-trc-persian-steak-knife---elmax.html
it started out with the retailer not being able to properly process the on stock item and update their status... this is just something that ticks me off because i expect that routine actions like this work without a hitch.
nevermind, so the package arrived... damaged. dpd retaped it because it was damage during transportation. the damage is partially due to the handling but also because the packaging (big flat square box) didn't fit the actualy knife packaging (round tube labeled as a gift packaging). no biggie, right, as long as the knife packaging is alright. which it wasn't.
here we start about the knife:
I can't tell whether this was from handling or manufacturing. one side of the tube was dented and the plug on the other side wasn't fully inserted. i first thought this was the reason why the knife was clattering around inside the tube. which wasn't the case. the tube is simply ill suited as a delivery method for the knife. i wouldn't be suprised of some of them came with their tips blunted due to constantly hitting the inside of the tube and the plugs.
so what did i get? a nicely shaped piece of elmax, nicely rounded edge, comfortable fit. finish is decent, but nothing over the top. what kind of strikes me as odd is that most of the finish is brushed/satined except for the small area at the bottom of the blade between the choil(?) and the actual blade and the butt of the handle. don't know whether this is supposed to be that way.
and it was blunt.
we are not talking "it just needs a bit of pressure" but i actually tried to intentionally cut myself (strange idea in hindsight)(without applying as much pressure as to cut to the bone) and i didn't. on any other blade i own, resting the blade against the skin and applying some light pressure while pulling back would have resulted in a more or less serious cut. and i am not even a sharpening nut.
i'm pretty sure this is not how it is supposed to be for a non serrated steak knife.
after some time on the work sharp (more to come) at 20° i could get it to at least slice some stiffer paper. obviously this disqualifies me from getting a refund. it is still not even close to shaving sharp... or any kind of sharpness i am used to (no matter what steel, 12c27, 440c, s30v, aeb-l). no clue what the issue is, but i will take it back to the work sharp this evening.
so... all in all, it sure looks nice, and i will give it the benefit of a doubt that the steel is properly treated (no way to know for me), but this is just not worth the money. on a side note, i will not be ordering from messerdepot again, as the replies from them were... unfriendly to say the least.
i doubt i will add pictures later on, as it seems to me to be a waste of time. i will resharpen it, make a sheath and sell it in the hope of not taking too much of a loss.
