Short hike and some tea on the stove

I went out solo today and the temps were right around freezing so the ground was frozen in places and greasy anywhere exposed to radiant energy. I opted not to hike too far.

Somehow I managed to carry about 4 more edges than I needed (actually, today I could have used the key knife in the image and done fine). I knew I had too many, but did not realize how many until I started pulling out every edge I could find on my person. Funny stuff.

So here is the legend for the photos:
1. My spot (the pack on the left and all my fuel (sticks) on the right)
2. Looking down at all my edged tools for the hike.
3. What they saw looking back.
4. The stove set up with cedar bark.
5. After a few too many sparks (I made things really hard on myself today by doing nothing right the first time)
6. The tea is almost done.

The hike home was interesting. The trees along the water line all had these crystal ornaments hanging from them (it has been windy lately, and right around the freezing mark). Cool stuff! I wish I had better images, but my phone does not do well with things more than a few feet away. These things were about 3 inches in diameter, and they were abundant.

Thanks Dennis. Glad to hear you are staying young! Chopping is great fun, I need to get a big chopper one of these days and get to work on some big lumber.

The "ornaments" probably formed as waves licked the dangling branches and then they froze when the energy dropped (and the wind/greater surface area probably aids the process greatly...been really windy here lately). Repeat that about 500 times and voilà! Really rare to see them this big round here.

As for the tea. I have been dealing with stomach flu like symptoms since Christmas so I made some Ginger tea to settle my gut. Tossed in some cedar heart for a little spice/aroma (and to stir). Tasted great and my stomach is still calm (knocking on wood).

Thanks for the comments!

Good stuff Unit. Are you sold on the little twig stoves yet?

Well they are fantastic, but somehow I managed to rush things today and it took way longer than it should have to get 'er going. I did about 5 things wrong before I stepped back and did things the right way.

In the end, yeah it is fantastic. Very few coals to deal with before hitting the trail. I dumped the coals and extinguished them while the stove was inverted on a stick I shoved into the soft ground. In this wind it cooled in seconds and I was on my way (drinking my hot tea with a smile).

Thanks!
