Short KA-BAR opinions?

Good morning. It's this model.

Durability wise is it much use as a utility knife?. I suppose the edge will need a little work to bring it up to standard?.
I'm looking shorter as the full size will just frighten people too much, and I have to generally keep resonable concealment anyway.

I'm of course acquainted with the larger models history and reputation, but wanted to check if the smaller model has dropped it.
Somewhere to purchase would be handy too.

Thanks. :)

What is the main purpose of the knife? I own three fixed blades, two of them are Kabars (large and small). I carry the small Kabar while hiking and short camping trips. It fills the role of utility/survival/camping just fine for me. I do prefer the Kraton grips vs leather.

I'm also looking to purchase a Ka-Bar.
What's kept me from ordering the shot so far, is it appears the handle is only 4" long, the full size knife the handle being about 4 3/4".
Do you find that the handle size is a issue?

I have the shorty and handle size is about the only issue it has. I carried it as my usual knocking around/hunting knife for about 4-5 years or so. Dressed a couple deer with it and it performed fine, though the sharpened swedge was not a good feature for that purpose. It's quite handy and makes a good choice as a field knife IMO but the handle is just a bit on the small size. I'm not bothered too much by it personally but someone with large hands may find it a bit cramped. I would like to see a little more diameter, more so than length.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts on the handle size
This helps in my decision of a reg Ka-Bar or the shorty.
I have a Scandi Luuku with a 8" blade but the handle is only 4" it takes a good strong wrist to keep it going.:p

I have a full-length KaBar & a shorty.
The full-length obviously fits my medium-sized hand just fine, the smaller one is perfectly do-able, but I picked it up as more of an entry level knife for a grandkid.

I just sold my short Ka-Bar NIB. It had all the same quality and ruggedness as the larger model except, like the other comments, the handle was not only shorter but also smaller in circumference. Just felt to dinky. I thought that the small Ka-Bar was just a shorter blade, I was wrong. :o
Would make a excellent knife for a woman or someone with small hands.

Blue Sky said it well. The handle is on the short side but I find it usable for most tasks. If you have large hands and it is gonna be your primary survival type knife, I'd choose something else.

Bus Driver: You might to look at this too. I've handled this and it looks to be a nice user too.

You do lose the ability to hammer with the pommel tho.

Great response fellas :D gazz98 that's a big ole bush knife for sure.
Lots of blade and lots of handle, might be worth considering.
lol it's so typical for us knife nuts, you start with a knife in mind and end up with a completely different model and sometimes a totally diffrent knife Company, than what you started with. boyzz boyzz boyzz
