Short kabar in wilderness

Just curious to see if any of you guys used a short kabar, leather handle, plastic sheath in the wilderness? How does the knife do in your chores and everyday use? How do you like carrying it in the bush?

As much as i like Kabars, I could never warm up to the short Kabar. It seemed to be to small for a big knife and to big for a small knife. JMO. That said, it should do a decent job at most camping tasks.

I agree with what udtjim about the it seems very small for a 5.5 inch blade and a little to big for what some work that a 3 inch knife or a 2.5 inch knife could do. It'd make a pretty good boot knife or a last ditch knife I think, but it's size and shape don't make it a very functional outdoor knife.

I have a short Ka-Bar tanto with the synthetic grip.
I got it when I was just getting started, I wasn't sure what features to look for, so i just went with a reliable brand...

The synthetic sheath can rub on the edge if you aren't careful during the draw dulling the blade. (I was confused the first few times about were my razor edge went)

I found the grip a little awkward, somehow it always ended up feeling too small or pinching.

Until I ground down the top guard. Problem solved. And now I can put my thumb on the spine for more control. The knife is easily 100% more practical after that mod.

If you asked me before I did that I would have said it wasn't a good knife for the tasks you outlined...now it might be pretty good, but i haven't really evaluated it in detail.

btw, it batons fairly well.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice. Enjoy the cooler weather outdoors.

I've EDC'd the 5.25 with leather sheath and bush carried it for years. Even used it as a dive knife for a bit. It holds up to abuse, reliable, solid design. Handle size isn't perfect but it's definitely large enough to get the job done. A fine knife for 35 dollars.
