Short range Gurkha weapons?

What kind of weapons, if any, would historic Gurkhas have used at "closer-than-kukri-range"? Would they have used katars? Or could the Karda or Chakma (they just seem like utility tools, yet they are bigger than many modern "tactical" knives) be used as improvised short-range fighting knives? Did Gurkhas practice a wrestling style of some sort?
