i've had an old delica for around 15 years. bought it from a friend at work, and always thought it was a decent knife (this was before i was a knife knut) and it has been a good edc folder. reminded me of the knife from the beastie boys video, back in the day. always wanted one like that. once i found out it was a real thing, and i could have one, something else always took priority.

until one day i found out the Canadian border services agency decided one hand openers were too dangerous to allow to be imported to Canada (despite the fact that the carry, purchase and manufacture of said knives are legal).

so i said screw it. i'm not waiting for all the knives in Canada to get bought up. I ordered one [C07S in VG10(...on my credit card...)] and said "to hell what my wife says!" then i found out it was to be delivered to my P.O box while on vacation with her. and up until then, i hadn't told her about it. getting to the p.o. box first was going to be tricky. so i was a little sweating bullet-y, despite being the master of my domain. then she mentioned she'd had to drop a buttload of cash on something. i had a few beers by then, so i don't remember what she bought. all i heard was "i did this, so i can't give you any b.s. for that". i said "booyah! i mean, i bought a new knife." the end of that discussion was that we're still not quite living paycheck to paycheck, but we both agreed to put our extra spending on hold. that goes in my win column.

so. i got a new knife. it's a beast. i thought it would look classy all polished up to wear with my suit. for fancy occasions and stuff. and it will. if i can keep it all clean and shiny and classy looking. right now, the fancy occasion is sitting in my pajamas drinking beer and looking at the computer. i think the finish will get scuffed all to hell, but it's a damn solid feeling knife. locks up tight as heck. heirloom quality in my opinion, and shaving sharp right out of the box. kudos to the spyderco team.

i'm not a cell phone guy, or a photographer guy, but if i get around to it, i'll take some snaps of it and my old delica.

Not quite right. "Flick" knives are the issue. Flippers. Gravity knives. You get the picture. I've had no problems with back locks being imported since the ruling, and they are definitely one-handed openers.

Sorry. I hate the spread of misinformation.

Glad you like your new knife.

J JoberSeven Thanks for the story!
C07S is the Police model, no?

Regardless, I’ll tell you this, you are going to love your new knife. My wife and I had many, many lean years while we were starting out. I really learned to cherish and care for my stuff, especially the rare “luxury” item.

I bought my first Spyderco, a Delica 1, back in those days. I think it was around $50, which seemed astronomical at the time (for us especially). It’s one of the few material items from that time that’s still with me, and has special value because of what it took to buy. It still rides along from time to time and the Spyderedge still does its job!

misinformation sucks, i agree. but i'm under the impression that flick knives, gravity knives, auto's and balisongs etc... have been illegal to import and carry. for a long, long time.
this thread https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/please-sign-canadian-knife-import-ban-e-petition.1557934/ says one handers are also considered dangerous to import. while it's mentioned in one of the articles linked to that thread that devices added to the blade are therefore attached to the handle to assist opening. that's apparently an issue for CBSA. it could be argued that a spydie hole is not added to the blade, but taken from the blade and perfectly within CBSA's guidelines. i didn't want to lawyer up to get my knife across the border.

the thread linked above might be misinformation, as well as the articles link within it. but it wouldn't surprise me one itty little bit if our government allowed an agency to ban imports of tools that it's own agents are carrying. sounds like the exact kind of backwards bull-crap i've learned to expect from our elected representatives.

...but i digress. i love this knife.

4merfmf, yes it's the serrated police model.

i have a delica, not sure what number, but it's a straight edge. othewise it's much like yours. first knife i bought with a pocket clip. changed the game for me right there.

It’s pretty vauge about what is actually banned. The various lines language are extremely broad and leave much to interpretation.

In my estimation a delica could be confiscated at the border since it can be flicked open in one motion as long as you give it some wrist action. They specifically mention that a knife that can be flicked open in one motion even if you need to use wrist can be confiscated.

Just because you got knives through doesn’t mean anything. The border agents don’t check every package coming through. You could mail butterfly knives and autos into Canada and they would get through most times.

right... i'm not disagreeing with you there. relying too much on the discretion of the agent inspecting the packages isn't good. for every rule we need boundary samples or gauges to take interpretation out of the picture.

however, i ordered my blade from within Canada's borders and it was shipped from within Canada's borders, so cbsa can kick rocks. let's be clear: i wasn't trying to sneak one past anybody. i just didn't want to get screwed over if the supply within our borders ran out. i've been disappointed waiting to long to order discontinued models. wasn't happening this time.

there's a canadian store that sells tires and other stuff. i can buy two one hand openers there for less than $12. they probably imported them by the gajillions before this nonsense started. and they can still sell them legally. heck, i could go make my own in my garage and that would be legal too.
the whole thing makes no sense to me. maybe i'm simplifying, but if it's legal to buy/carry/manufacture, it should be legal to import. unless of course we happen to be in a trade war or some such with the country of origin.

as you said, there's too much left open to interpretation. i'm just glad i got mine before the supply ran out.

No I understood all that.

I’m glad you were able to find some inside Canada. I have a local store that is still importing flippers and everything by the buttload.

I was only commenting to FourD that I believe even a delica could get confiscated.

You take a chance no matter what, I suppose, as there is room for interpretation. Retailers with a permit to sell firearms are exempt from the recent CBSA ruling, so that could play a role in what your local supplier has.

They don’t sell firearms. I think alot of Canadian retailers have said “screw it” and are just risking it. Either that or maybe the fact that they haven’t been bit yet means my local guys aren’t taking it seriously.

You can buy a bunch of knives that violate the import ban at Canadian tire or home depot. I doubt all their knives have been in the country since before the ban.
