I thought some of you folks would be interested in this short presentation about Sheffield cutler Trevor Ablett. In his 80's, Trevor still works 7 days a week. He produces traditional Sheffield patterns, assembled from parts he buys in, which sell for between £25 and £40. His working practices are very different to those of Stan Shaw for example, but he still produces some nice knives I think.

Thanks guys. Sorry the link didn't work for you Pete, did you try pasting it into your browser? A shame to miss it as it's different to the You Tube films (for which thanks also) :)

Enjoyable insight into the shops quickly disappearing. Thanks for the link.

Cheers guys. I enjoyed the Pathe newsreels Bdev, that's just how I talk! :D

Thanks for all of the " shorts" in this thread, every one was worth watching:thumbup: it was a pleasure to view Mr. Ablette at work :) I even learned a trick or two...here's to him mending quickly and returning to his shop to do what he appears to love so much, making more knives!

Thanks so much Jack, I never get sick of watching vids such as this.

Kris,.

A nice taste of Sheffield!
Thanks Jack, et.al!
I especially like that "Sea of Ettricks" shot in the first Ablett short.

"that's just how I talk!:D"

Are you a radio announcer Jack? Very dramatic!:D
Under the great Smoke Umbrella!!:eek::rolleyes:

I thought you'd like the Ettrick shot Charlie. I never realised he produced so many knives. I'm off over to Sheffield today, hopefully dip a toe, even if I don't get to swim! ;)

I have done some radio work, but it was a VERY long time ago! ;)

Very interesting documentary. Amazing . Some day I'd like to go to England and meet Mr. Ablette. Stan Shaw too of course. They are national treasures.

I've just returned from Sheffield - a rather Hellish trip I'm afraid, delayed trains, foul-weather, a train station full of drunken soccer fans and paramilitary policemen, and unproductive in terms of the knife I was hoping to pick up. However, I was told by a lady in one of Sheffield's two remaining cutlery shops that Trevor had been in the day before. I knew he'd recently had an accident at work, which turns out to have been falling off a stool while changing a light-bulb. He suffered a broken arm, but is on the mend, and hopes to return to work soon. I imagine he's missing his workshop :)

Great videos! I loved how he solders his bolsters on.

And he doesn't use slackeners at all.

Thought I'd stick in a couple of pics of two of Trevor's knives.

Another thanks Jack!!! I just cant get enough of videos like that. You talk about a working Man's hands!!!

Have a great weekend Jack!!!
