got fed up with the kids and GF sitting on their butts everyday watching the idiot box so today i got everyone up early and made them go OUTSIDE.

OUTSIDE, a strange and netherworld unknown to the slack jawed stupefied weak facebook/twitter/ generation. A world where the temperature constantly changes, light and dark evolves and where one actually has move their limbs, instead of just twitching their fingers on a cell phone and letting the drool slide out of the corners of their slack jawed gaping mouths. OUTSIDE, a strange world where one experiences different sensations and feelings. OUTSIDE, a realm foreign to most of this generation described above, a world they are scared of, because the news have told them its a bad place.

anyways, rant aside (I HIGHLY recommend EVERYONE here read "Last Child In The Woods) i dragged them outside.

Hit a local park in Burnaby, and we started wandering. The kids got frustrated at not knowing "where they were going". I set them straight by stating "sometimes the journey is the destination". (they still were unsure)

as we hiked it was hard as hell to get them to NOT cling to us as we hiked. Get the bleep off of me and give me some space, and go explore as we hike for bleep sakes!

aaaaaannnnyways......made them climb a nice steep switchbacked trail to make their weak hearts and lungs work a bit, and to make their sweat glands expel the INSIDE world out of them.

some pics

any idea what this is? it crumbled very fine, would make good tinder me thinks

INSIDE world is always watching you in the OUTSIDE world, this lamp pole and camera were in the middle of the greenway trail in the woods. I mooned it.

in the OUTSIDE world, nature takes care of itself, here a old rotting tree feeds a pile of fungus

another tree......about 1000lbs worth of fatwood, tree was over 7' in diameter at the base, and was solid fatwood

dried leaf bathing in sunlight (ah sunlight, so foreign to the slack jawed INSIDE people)

during the hike, the boy complained about his hands being cold. I asked him "where are the gloves i told you to pack?" he replied with "it was sunny so i didn't need them". ya OK, that'll learn ya eh boy! :foot:

as we climbed the steep zigzagged trail, silence finally descended on us as the exertion (a new sensation for the INSIDE crowd) took effect. Pure bliss for the GF and I.

the lesson here is we all need to tell the kids NO! a lot more when it comes to sleeping in until noon, watching tv , playing PS3, and playing on the computer. GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY! its OK to use your imagination and have fun and get wet and muddy !

Love those pics. When they get back they get to rest by pushing the lawnmower!

People find that appalling but now my son has his own family and knows how to work to support them! He did not learn that from sitting in front of a TV.

I use electronics too ( like right now:() but I don't let it rule my life like this newer younger generation does. They can't go 5 minutes without a cell phone,X-Box, DS , or idiot-box. Glad to see you're puttin' some real into their lives :foot::thumbup: ( There really has to be an a$$ kicking smilie;someone fix that !)
What blows me away is your pics. We are in the middle of a major snow/cold spell right now and you guys are basking in sunshine:mad::) In January !!
And we're only one province away !! I envy you Bushie ( except for the bush Narcs you got there, lol !) Still, you have a lot of cool places to go there and not far to get to them. I'm glad to see you get out and drag the heathens with you. I commend you brother, for instilling values and fortitude into this younger generation where electronics , not nature , tend to rule.
Now back to our regularly scheduled " Great pics, Bushman 5 !" program.
:D

ya i heard about yer snow and chills.....i WISH we had tons of snow and bitter cold here......cuz i would delight in taking the chilluns winter camping hahahahahahaahah

We're still digging out (:jerkit: insert shovel.)

LMAO !!! :)

If you ever make it out this way ( come nicer weather maybe) I can show you places where almost anything goes ( firearms included) , with no intrusive cameras or people scared of what's hanging off your belt. ;)

Cameras in the bush?? That's just wrong. In Canada's wilderness no less. I've never seen that till you posted it. Nonetheless , your landscape always looks very impressive to spend time in .I hope to some day.;)

Great topic and pic's, kind of reminded me of the book, The Winter of Our Disconnect, by Susan Maushart, the mother of three teenagers, that decided to stop (ban) all household TV, internet, computers, computer games, iPods, cell phones, dvd players, etc for six months!

I've just listened to a week of readings from it on BBC Radio 4, (you can probably catch it on the BBC iPlayer). Very, very interesting. Families with teenage kids should read it!

too funny. i hear yah. get him into mountain biking or bmx at least...it's a stealthy way of getting him outside. or heck, get him a skateboard.

by the way, awesome pics!

we got hit with a 2+ ft of snow two weeks ago, another 4" last friday, and another at least 6" or more this tuesday night! i went for a hike today and i was knee deep in snow in a lot of sections of the trail. nj is starting to look like canada i tell yah.

Great pics Bushy, wish I could get my kid out more, at least he is now spending a little less time on his X-Box and more time practicing on his electric guitar !

great pics man

if you keep it up, they're gonna run a story about the lower mainland mooner on cbc news at 11. :D

Fortunatly "Call of Duty" has taught your kids to navigate such strange, outdoor terrain. Haha.

Sounds like my Dad growing up. If we were not out of the house and in the woods by 9 am, all of a sudden the shed had to be painted or something else like that. What a great way to grow up. You better believe I'll be doing that with my kids.

I can't find this "outside" game for my PS3 or the Wii. Is it for the DS or just the PC. Can I download it to my phone so I can play while I'm stuck in that scary, wet and cold place that surrounds my house.;):p

Seriously though, good on you. I do the same with my kids often.

I used to be one of those people, mostly because I let all the inside stuff suck me in. Thankfully got my head on straight again, signed me and the boy up for Scouts, and now when I am stuck indoors, I spend all my time trying to figure out what I am going to do next when I get back outside.
