Total new guy here, quick question about temper. I am shortening my third Ontario machete blade to add an 8" double handle.
My question is- should I soften the temper at the top of the handle since it will now be up the blade a few inches. Had a problem with the first one I did where the blade sheered off right at the handle. The last two have been fine and are still going strong with years of fairly hard use.
So, does the factory soften the temper right at the handle top. After removing the handle, it looks like there is a torched spot just under the handle top.
