Shortened BK-7

Hey guys. Just curious if anyone has shortened a BK-7? I have a nice BK-7 but kind of wish I had bought the BK-10 a few years ago instead. I debated between the two and decided that the 7 would be nice, which it is, but I think it would get more use being shortened up to around 5.5" long like the 2 or 10.

I thought about just buying the 10, but I really don't need to get another knife and not use this one. So I am thinking of shortening the blade and either keeping the tip profile or go with a modified 10, or 2 profile. One reason I am thinking of just shortening the 7 is because I like the higher grind better then the lower grind of the 10.

Here is a quick image I made up with the 7 shortened but keeping the same profile.

What do you guys think? Anyone else shorten their BK-7?

Thanks,
Greebe

I say go for it, I know we would all like to see it.

But if you don't feel like modding it, you could always sell you're 7 and buy either a 10 or 12

that shortened rendering is hawt.
Or you could buy a BK-17 as a companion and they'd average out. :)

Hmmm ... it might be easier to get a 10 and 'clip it'.

The 10 has essentially the same blade as the 7 and is already 5.5". Grind back the swedge and the belly of the 10 to match the 7 and ... viola! ;)

Thanks guys. One of the reasons I like the idea of shortening the 7 better then using a 10, is because I like the higher flat grind of the 7 better then the lower grind on the 10. Also if I were to trade for a 10, that could take a while and who knows what someone did to it before sending it to me.

Warrior- Thanks. It was just a quick clone tool edit in Linux GIMP. I have Photoshop on a windows boot, but like using Linux better. I remember seeing your 2, I like it.

I really like the looks of the straight clip, but I am also thinking about a more utilitarian point shape. As much as I love the straight clip I wonder if I should do a drop point. Maybe I could still do a straight clip, but leave more meat at the point to make it stronger and easier on the the weak hand thumb.

Keep doing renderings until you see the one you just have to have.

Go for it if you want, but having seriously modded my 7 I'd say just buy the 10. Grinding away that much hardened 1095 is going to SUCK, IMO. Plus, unless you've got some mad skillz (I do not) putting the swedge back on is going to be tricky, especially getting it to meet the tip properly. Not to mention thinning out the tip so you have a sharp point. You mention not "needing" another knife.....NO ONE needs another knife, but I wouldn't let that stop me (probably the same for everyone else here) - and neither should you.

That being said, I'll be looking forward to the results ;). Your rendering looks great, BTW, as Dubz has already pointed out.

You might be right that the 10 would be better for modding to a what I want instead of using this 7. Something to think about. Thanks
