Hi,
Recently I bought a Large regular Sebbie, customized by mr Mayo. The work is excellent! And the blade is made of stonewashed BG steel.

The blade is shorter than the one of my ordinary Large Regular (S 30). Of course it can be the result of the ccutomizing but it doesn´t look like it and I cannot figure out why mr Mayo would shorten the blade...

Where the blades shorter on older Sebenzas? I don´t know which year on this one but it is different from newer onces in some ways. For example are there are some grooves/decoration around the handle.

Thanks

It is possible that with a lot of sharpening a blade can become shorter/less wide.

Yes, every time you sharpen you are grinding metal from the blade. Repeated sharpening will wear the blade away. Many people new to sharpening tend to use coarser stones to much and take off more metal than necessary.

It may be just a dimensional change in manufacturing. What is the difference in sizes?

Yes, maybe is it a result of a lot of sharpening. But I don´t think so. The hole knife is mint. Mr Mayo put a nice satin finish on, (how do you say??) the small flat part of the side of the blade close to the back of blade?? I guess you understand. But the rest of the blade is mint stonewashed surface.

The difference in size is pretty big. I am not familiar with the inches system but let´s say 5 milimeters, I think it is close to 0.2 inches.

You bought the large regular from Steel Addiction? 5mm, hmm.

I can say that I had a small I broke the tip on, and with resharpening to get the point I probably lost 3mm. I'd say that's within the realm of sharpening loss, especially as Tom re bevels the entire blade.

I would not worry about it.

Yes it is the Steel Addiction knife. I have to say that I really love it. Everything is perfect and the blade problem really isn´t much of a problem. It feels like the perfect clone between a Mayo and a Sebenza. It is much easier to unlock and butter smooth. And I prefer the double custom thumb lock (not so pointy).

Are you able to post a picture of the knife? Where do you find the Mayo customized Sebbies?

I noticed that the Steel Addiction site lists the blade length of your knife as 3.5 inches, while the CRK site lists the large Sebenza blade length as 3.625 Could this be the difference?

I didn´t notice before. But all Mayo Sebenzas are listed as 3.5. I guess that DaveH had the answer. When mr Mayo re bevels the blade it loses in length.

Still a great knife thought. I think I will email Tom and ask him about the magic.

I just compared blade lenghts on my Mayonized large seb to a new flatgrind and a new regular woodie, all blade sizes are identical.

You must realize that when sebenzas were sent to Mr. Mayo for customizing, some were new and some were most likely well used, maybe even some with broken tips.
When Tom was done working his magic, they all came out great, however, blade length may differ slightly due to past use.

Regardless, all mayonized sebenzas, even if listed as being in mint condition must be considered as being used and not new since they have been modified and are no longer at factory specifications.

That being said, they are all incredible and I wish I had more then just one:)
