Shotgun Barrel Damascus?

I've been thinking of "donating" an old piece of crap Mossberg shotgun to the local Police for disposal. But then I wondered if the barrel could be forge welded shut, and folded like damascus?

Of course, I would have to saw off the vent rib and the piece of crap "dial a choke" at the muzzle.

Any thoughts, opinions, or relevant experiences? If this might work, I'll ust give the Police the reciever, pump, and a bag of parts. I could use the stock for handle material!

We talked about this on the knife list and it was pretty much decided that it would be too hard to get a good clean weld on the inside of the barrel. Doesn't meant it isn't possible tho!

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

AAAHHHHHH!

My blood runs cold at the thought of any firearm being "disposed of" by police.
If you do not want it give it to a hunter with a upcoming young hunter that will need his own bird gun in a few years.

Give it to a gunsmith to salvage parts from.

I had a old Moss 400 with a bent barrel. Had it shortened to 20 inches and it made a great recovery gun for bear hunting with a bow.

Recycle it just do not destroy it. You will be helping the antis.

Hey, Jim Hirsoulas has been making damascus from m-16 barrells and ak-47's and calling them cold war specials.

The tube from the shotgun ought to work for mosaic damascus, pack the barrell with steel and go for it

If the shotgun is usable I'll trade you a knife for it.

I don't know alot about forging damascus(next to nothing

) But what about cramming a peice of steel downt he barrel adn then hitting the whole thing with a press. Doesn't 52100 come in round stock? I bet it could be done.

You can do it
Split it in half, shot blast it clean, then forge it flat. Clen it up and stack it with higher carbon (1084). It will make damscus!

These barrels work well when cut down one side, and then a flat piece of high carbon, 52100, etc. inserted as the core. One must be careful to forge evenly, since there is not much material that you can afford to grind away. It does work well!

Go for it,but use all the steel from the gun instead of just the barrel...It will work

There isn't such a thing as a piece of crap Mossburg. You may need to replace the BBL and some parts but they always come back shooting. NEVER give the police anything. They can steal their own!
