Shotgun or rifle?

I just turned 18 last week, so now I can legally buy long guns. :D I'm kinda wondering.....should I get a shotgun and trick it out (Remington 870 or Mossberg 500) or save my pennies and get a Bushmaster? I already have two shotguns for hunting (old Savage single-shot 20 and old Browning A-5 16), so maybe another shotgun would be overkill. I only have one rifle, a Marlin .22, and my dad has no rifles, so maybe I should get an AR clone, like a Bushmaster. I don't hunt or shoot as much as I would like to, so they'd probably see intermittent use at best. I guess I'm just trying to make a decision as to what I'm actually going to look for.....any suggestions?

its hard to answer you question w/o knowing what you want it for. if for home defense, either will work well but a short shotgun is slightly better. for hunting the .223 is underpowered for deer but a shotgun w/ slugs has a range of only 100 yards.

it sounds like you are me - looking for a cool factor gun. the bushmaster has the advantage there. a tricked out 870 is pretty cool too and cheaper but youll still want the bushmaster. get a shorty!

A cool (?) shotgun? Interesting concept.
Hmmmmm.... wonder if a "Street sweeper" would
qualify? :D :D

All kiding aside.....
I think for a casual shooter a shotgun is ideal. :)

For your first "real" long-gun, get yourself a Marlin model 336 30-30 lever-action. That was MY "first", and it is STILL a very useful rifle.

Even in jest, i dont think its appropriate to suggest anyone break a law, as we all know, the powers that be take the barrel length of shotguns VERY seriously.

You got it, man. Coolness factor is huge for me right now. ;) I still live at home, and we're in a pretty crime-free, suburban neighborhood, so I don't think I'd really have much need for a home defense weapon, any more than is obviously needed.

As of now, I'm leaning toward the shorty Bushmaster. It's mean, efficient, practical (I guess) and I figure I better get mine before they ban them. Problem is, the cheapest I've ever seen them was about $800, as opposed to maybe $200 plus trick accessories for the shotgun.

Decision, decisions......maybe if you all could post or link to pics of these guns, it might help me decide. ;)

Get a Ruger 10/22 in stainless and trick it out. Or better yet, yet one of the factory hot rodded ones with hammer a forged barrel. With match ammo and decent optics these can be made into real tack drivers for purely recreational shooting. A few years back there was even a class just for a hot rodded 10/22 for match competition, for all I know, they still might have it. It was designed so folks could shoot competitively without haveing to build a $2000.00 rifle.

i would get either an AR15 or an AK myself, shotgun would be cool too, but prices on AR's and such seem to keep going up, imho, might be time to get while the getting is good......also mags/etc going up .........

I would get a used Mossberg and look for a used Bushmaster or Rock River. Find a good gunshop (harder than it sounds) and let 'em know what you are looking for. Lots of gun guys trade their guns like knife knuts do! Good used guns are the best bang for your buck! (pun fully intended;) )

If you want a short shotgun, just do it legally and get an AOW and pay the transfer fee.

"Get a shot gun and saw off the barrel"

Glenn/Spyder Punk, you say this twice, with 2 references to Kurt Cobain in your signature line. I've got to ask, do you REALLY think that's funny?

Work whatever you have to, and get a Colt. Far fewer issues.

Get the pump gun when you can, esp in early spring when people have to pay taxes. Pawn shops are shotgun heavy in most cases, and the price can be very nice. Just picked up a Wingmaster Magnum RC Deer for $225. Couple dings, but hits where it should.

Glenn/Spyder Punk, I was referring to the COMBINATION of "Get a shot gun and saw off the barrel" and your Kurt Cobain references, NOT your Kurt Cobain references alone...
