my collection is still small-1/2 dozen-so my knives get some attention, if nothing else to contribute to my spreading knife mainge-but have seen several for sale posts that include "knife stored open"-i have one auto microtech socom the rest are manual action-thanks for any responses

Long term storage of any auto should be in a relaxed state, with the kinetic spring energy dissipated,(released).

As far as non auto folders go, either way works, it all depends on how they are stored, and what they are stored with.

I collect a lot of older slipjoints, some of them have celluloid scales which can deteriorate rather rapidly, giving of a gas which will affect almost all steel if left in contact long enough, the same thing applies to storing blades in leather sheaths.

Basically, it all depends on what you collect, and what your trying to prevent during storage.

A little more specifics will get you more accurate answers.

I would think liner locks and frame locks should be stored open for longer durations.

Some of my folders are on display in the open position, but those that I cherish a little more are stored closed in padded cases. The oldest being stored for almost four years. There doesn't appear to be any difference caused by storing it closed. Now if we're talking thirty years, I have no clue.

As for autos, are there some automatic knives that have the spring in an "at-rest" state even closed? One that comes to mind is the Microtech Makora. I can't find the text I'm looking for, however I thought that it's design released the spring until it was needed, hence it's auto open/close feature.
