I have two used Buckmaster 184 knives and was wondering if they should be annealed. I ask because I read that sometimes the blade breaks at the base. I haven't abused my knives but after reading about the possibality of breakage I've gotten paranoid.
Thanks much

Hello,
It is very likely that the tang of your Buckmasters are already annealled. We started doing that very early on in the production of that knife because we got a few with broken tangs. It was a precaution. Can you tell me what is stamped on the blades? From that, I may be able to tell if yours have been annealed.

Take care,

They both read:

BUCK
184
U.S.A.
Pat. Pend.

On one of them the lettering is thin and lightly stamped, the other the lettering is bolder and stamped deeper.

Thanks Joe

Based on that tang stamping, It is safe to say that they were tang annealed. We started doing it fairly soon and you two knives have the second stamping so they should be Ok.

Take care,

PDD Ed Lee - Yours is a variation #5. That date code was only made January 1987 thru February 1987. Estimated only 936 were made.
If it is the black oxide version with that date code they estimate only 199 were made.
You see many more with the 1986 date code with the arrow that points to the 184 because they estimate 45,452 were made with the bead blasted finish and 1,102 in black oxide.
