Should have bought new....?

So I'll try and make a long story short. I've never owned a CRK but I've wanted a Sebenza for years and finally decided to save up for one. I sold a few of my knives to fund it and bought a used Small Sebenza 31 PJ. I was PUMPED!

It showed up today and the blade was rubbing the show-side scale so I went to see if the screws were tight and they already were. I took it apart to clean it out and noticed one of the washers was bent.

I filled out a warranty form and will send it to CRK tomorrow to get fixed. I'm just bummed that I've waited this long for one and have to immediately send it for 4-8 week turn around.

I will say the guy I bought it from was very nice and sent me 20 bucks to help with shipping. Not that they are readily available anyway.... But I'm thinking I should have just saved up a little more for a new one.

Oh well, once I get it back it will basically be new!

The problem isn't with buying new vs secondary market. The problem is with the guy that sold it to you. He should have divulged the problem to start with, but having failed that, taken it back or fully covered the trip to CRK. I have purchased loads of Sebenzas over the years on the secondary market and can't remember any I had to send in immediately. I am not sure I have sent in any for problems latter either, although 1 problem was discovered while in there for a spa treatment.

Yeah, I was a little pissed that he didn't say that before the sale. He seemed like a good guy, we talked about the anodizing we both do and he seemed like he was a competent knife guy. But after I got the knife in hand I asked him about the problem and his response was "I thought that was normal" and he never took it apart because "he didn't know how to put it back together".

I probably should have asked more questions before buying

I've bought several used CRKs and never had a big problem. One came kind of dry but just needed some lube. Always ask for more pictures. That seller is a jerk.

I'm inclined to agree. Seems like something pretty obvious to tell the person you're selling it to. Live and learn I guess, looking forward to getting it back from CRK. I also order a spare set of washers just in case.

Blade rubbing against Ti is usually a pinched washer. Watch CRK's YouTube disassembly video and learn to maintain it yourself you may not need to mail it anywhere. Don't over tighten any screws when the blade is off center because you just damage the washer.

Wow! I probably would have grabbed my 2.5 lb. hammer and flatten that out on my vise and reassembled the knife. I don’t have the patience to send a brand new to me knife back to the manufacturer.
I could have (probably should have) done that but I was worried about causing more damage to the knife. Not sure if it would, but I didn't want to F up the blade or scales by using the knife with a damaged washer after I tried to flatten it. It sucks that I have to wait longer to get it (especially being my first CRK) but at least it will be practically new when I finally get it back

Did you buy it on this forum? Was it new from a dealer? Curious... Bart

That doesn't pass the sniff test, especially if he was the original owner. Absolutely no way that left CRK like that. It probably should read: "I took apart, boogered it up and don't know how to properly put it back together."

Sucky situation for sure.

I’ve also had to send a new-to-me Sebenza to Bosie.
Honestly, I‘m not sure if it arrived off center or if I buggered it up. All I can say for certain is that I opened the package late at night and with a not quite fully intact mental status….

The following morning began with a big WTF? and a trip to the post office. 😔

I hope your 31 is awesome when you get it back!

The seller should have disclosed the problem. If the washer was bent it's not CRK's fault so you'd be lucky to have it repaired as a warranty.

I am sure there will be a charge, for the reason you stated. Washers though aren't too expensive. It's the shipping of the knife that is a killer.

It's $2 per washer. You have to do it in pairs since they are fitted to the knife. But they will sell you an extra set that matches your knife so I did that as well.
