I am lucky enought to be going on a trip to Africa. And for some reason I want to take my Umnumzaan. I am not sure of the laws and blade length so that is an issue but will do more research. If I decide to take it what would be the safest way to pack it. As anyone done this before. Would love everyones thoughts.
thanks,
Bill

I can't tell you about the knife laws in Africa but there are members here that will know more. I do travel a lot my self and while I have never been to Africa I have been all over Asia, Europe and to the US. If I'm going to a place that is "less than savory" I usually take the knife apart and pack the blade in my toiletries bag and take the handle with me in my hand luggage. I have done that for years now with my CRK folders and never had any problems. :)

I would never trust the TSA enough to do that. They might just find it. I had an EMPTY pistol cartridge case on a keychain, with empty primer hole, and they took that away. Logic has a way of escaping them.

South Africa has some great custom knifemakers. I think I would pay them a visit. Might be able to get one, without the two-year wait.

Dont do it.... it'll come up missing.
Grab a user Para 2, hide it well in toiletry kit..

I can understand that but unfortunately the US is one of the worst countries for "bag dippers". Even the UK is nowhere near the US for luggage invasions. :p I have never had my luggage opened in probably 40+ flight in Asia and only a couple of times in mainland Europe. You guys seem to have to be a lot more careful than the rest of us.

My air travel process is very much like Haze's. Works great. I put the Seb handle in the conveyor belt bowl along with keys, loose change, etc., just to be full disclosure. I routinely get a TSA agent examining the empty handle, seemingly quite conflicted. He/she appears to be thinking, "This should be dangerous and against the rules, but I can't figure out why it should be . . ."

Are you going on a Safari....?? If so, you would think it could go with the gun's, etc. Just a normal trip, I am not sure. I have always wanted to go, but never did. So the response have been interesting. Its a shame the honest people are the ones punished for people like the terrorists here and abroad they liken us too. Just think about it, one of the planes on 911, supposedly all they had was knives and that did not end well, so you can see why the high security. We all know TSA can be pretty bad, I for one would not risk it.

You could ask a hunter who recently has been to the country you are going to vist.
My experiences were good, but things changed since then.
I'd put it in my suitcase in a sheath and in a case.
In the case i put my business card and maybe a small instruction how to unfold it.
hope this helps

I don't fly very often, but the last couple of times I did what Haze does. The TSA agent asked to see the empty handle, inspected it carefully, and let me go on my way.

Another option is to use one of these:

http://www.gunvault.com/nano-vault-100.html

http://www.brownells.com/shooting-a...n-cases/nanovault-pistol-safes-prod42626.aspx

It works well with a small revolver. You can use the cable to wrap around a structural member of the suitcase, then it could not be removed from your suitcase. I did that to be sure it did not walk away with a revolver in it.

Thanks you one and all!! Great information. I know I will take the Umnumzaan with me now I will just have to decide either to take it apart or get the Nano vault. I will be going to Tanzania. And thanks for the custom knife maker tip.

I don't understand TSA. Do they allow you to pack "weapons" to bring with you? I would always be afraid of getting my stuff taken. I've heard some horror stories.
