should i be concerned by this dent?

hey everyone.

I just joined though I have been creeping for some time. I've recently been expanding my collection and received a Manix 2 in CPM S110v a few weeks ago. during the time I've been using, I have noticed a small dent forming below the lower finger choil kind of near where the blade makes contact with the stopping mechanism. my question is should I be worried about the integrity of the metal being compromised by this, like causing internal stress and making it more susceptible to snapping? I email Spyderco and they just said to send it in. but, if it is not a safety concern I would rather not part with it for the 3+ weeks the process will take. I have a pic. and any opinions on whether it is worth it to send in or not would be greatly appreciated!!

If the steel is deforming that easily in contact with the mechanism, it's not likely to break or snap. Steel that chips, cracks or breaks under stress is usually an indication of brittleness (too hard), whereas this sort of plastic deformation (denting, bending, etc.) is an indication that the steel is somewhat soft or ductile. I don't think I'd worry about it breaking. BUT, it should at least be hard enough to withstand that sort of wear without deformation. Good reason to send it back to Spyderco and let them resolve it to your satisfaction.

Yea, that looks like it may not have been heat treated well. I'd send it in and have them take a look at it.

Where did you buy it? Are you sure it is an authentic Spyderco knife?

That's definitely not right, no way S110V would be doing that unless something is very, very wrong.

I hate to admit that I got it off of amazon, however, the particular seller specifies in knives only and seemed reputable( i hope). I've since switched to blade HQ where I got a pm3lw and have the native 5 in spy27 on pre-order :) that aside, I agree with you in that this seems off. I will be sending it to Spyderco as they would be the authority on it.

packaging and contents do seem to be legit though you never know

also, thank you everyone for the responses! coming in fresh with a question like this I expected to get yelled at lol. but I want to be safe rather than sorry. and if it happens to be a fake( i hope not), then ill be reporting the seller to Amazons integrity team.

Those new pics help a lot! Doesn't appear to be a fake as far as I can tell (and I'm not sure if any fake Manix S110V's have been reported), but you do gamble buying on the Big River. Even reputable sellers can inadvertently sell fakes on there when someone scams them by sending back a fake after receiving the real deal. If it's shipped by Amazon, the seller may never see the return, and it can get resold.

Sending it in to Spyderco is definitely your best bet! Good luck!

makes sense to me. I did not think about the possibility of someone sending back a fake intentionally. ill be sending it in for sure and report here for curiosity's sake.

thanks again!

It looks like both of mine.

That said, the denting seems suspect. I would not think that portion would be any softer than the rest of the blade.

The S110v is run pretty hard, and in my experience will chip before any deflection occurs.

Can you take clearer pics of the area in question?

it's not highly noticeable but definitely is there. there also is a slight haloing kind of effect around the center of the dent. the more i look at it, the more i realize it shouldn't even have been a question of sending it in.

To me, it looks like a bit of sloppy machining work while someone was cutting the jumping.

just mailed it out today. will probably be a while until I get it back as they said they are currently on a 3-week turnaround on warranty repairs.

I'm starting to think the same.

Was looking at the Manix2 I have in S90V w/carbon fiber handle. There doesn't seem to be much, in the way of hard-edged internal hardware, to inflict that sort of damage at that location on the blade. Closest thing is the detent ball for the lock, which is cradled by a piece of polymer or similar material. No way that plastic piece could dent the steel like that. I'm thinking it's more an issue of sloppy millwork in manufacture - even the jimping itself looks kind of distorted in the pics. Still something that could be a warranty issue, nevertheless.

I also thought it was interesting how corrosion is forming by the pivot. This is usually where I find this, as it’s harder to keep dry and clean.
