Should I be using this?

My wife got me the a black BM 710 I wanted for my birthday. I used it for a month and showed it off to a friend of mine and he told me that I shouldn't use it and it's a collectors item. My wife got it from her brother's collection of knives (he has a lot) who is overseas in the Army. So should I use this knife or is it really a collectors item? 710BT

Thanks in advance

Use it, but just get a bunch of good pics of it so that you can look back if the coating gets worn off from some good use. I don't think it will go up that much. maybe if it was a prototype it would be worth something.

Any knife can be worth collecting to someone. But generally speaking, production knives are not collectible in the technical sense. Their value lies in their utility, in terms of which the 710 is quite valuable. But as a dust collector with greatly enhanced financial value some years from now? No.

Use it.

It's not a Limited Edition, or a Special Edition, or a Collector's Edition, or a Prototype, or any other fancy technical term, it was just one of the first ones made.

Its just one quality made knife begging to do what it was manufactured for.

Err... I mean.. :o

Use it.

:D

Use it. early production models are more fun to cut with.:D
That particular model isn't worth much more if anything than any other 710.

I have a similar model ATS-34 710SBT, and the BT coating holds up really well.
Here's mine after about eight years use.. Great knife! -Ron

i have a 710 proto (in LNIB shape) and i dont know if its worth much of a premium over a std one, a bit maybe, but not a whole lot, i dont think anyway lol.

but anyway i go with everyone else and say to just use the thing.

I never buy a knife that I can't use.

And if it can't be used, it ain't a knife (an old Chinese saying ;-).

Look its not a crime to buy a cheap (for you) knife to use as your carry knife, but your wife got that for you so you could use it. If someone buys you a gift you show them you like it by using it; once it gets to the point where additional use may push it over the edge then you can put it in the box for safe keeping.

If you werent intent on having it as a collectible then why the change of heart? I say you carry it; dont abuse it and take good care of it and it will last you for years and years and years.

A lot of Benchmades go up in value after they are discontinued. That isn't one of them, though. The 710 just changed steel, and it isn't considered a downgrade. I have an M4 version, and it isn't getting used. I wish I had held onto other models, like the 690, 552 in M2, 806D2, 45, etc. They have gone up or at least held at the original price. People generally only tell you that Busses and CRK do that.

Whatever you do with your knives, you aren't wrong as long as you find enjoyment.

Once it is used, it is used.

NIB it could have brought more money, since some people do collect early production versions of various models.

Some may pay more for ats-34, also. I don't consider D2 an "improvement" and I've talked with others who agree. And the coatings were better on the older 710 models IMO.

If I didn't have M2 and M4 versions to carry, I'd carry one of my 154cm versions, with an ats34 variant next in line.

the 1 out of 1000 just means use it more often so you can show more people the knife! honestly, how many of us will invite someone into our home to look at our collection and say look at this specific bm 710 with 1 out of 1000 stamped on it? unless you go to shows...then that is kind of the point I guess. oh well better put it to some good use man!!l

if my sister took a knife out of my collection and gave it to her loved one for use, i wouldn't turn a blind eye to it. if someone can use one of the 100 knives I have (more like 12-13) and im not using it that particular day, I say go for it.

Whenever I replace a knife type, I pass on the original, in good condition, to someone that I know will use it as intended.

I consider knives to be working tools, and that if they were capable of expressing their choice, it would be that they are put to work, not locked away, unused!

I vote for use it too. That is a great knife and is meant to be used. Doesn't seem to be a high prized collector in any case. Really like that model myself.

If I own it, I use it! The morning mail doesn`t stand a chance against my 710, lol.

Life is too short for a knife knut to buy a quality cutting tool and stash it in the bottom of a safe, IMHO.
