Should I buy this knife?

The local pawn shop has a Benchmade 720 Mel Pardue axis lock. It has a black handle and a satin finished partially serrated blade. The knife appears to be in about 95% condition. It appears to have been carried some and seems to have the original edge. The action seems somewhat stiffer than any other benchmade I've ever used. It probably just needs oil. There is no box with the knife and the price is 49.95 + tax. I offered $40 and was turned down. Is his price fair and if so should I go back and get it. Thanks for your opinions.

That knife brand new at New Graham is $106.25...

Sounds like an easy decision to me :D

If i liked the style, and if it felt comfortable in my hand, yep i'd take it. Sounds like a good deal, on a good knife, to me.

I'd still try to barter him tho, maybe $45 out the door, or $45 plus tax, just to feel like i accomplished something. $5 is $5.

If you don't buy it I'll fly over there and buy it myself...(Now, where'd I put my Superman cape???.:D.:D.).

Sounds like a deal to me. In a perfect world it would go like this: You'd have started with "all I can really spend right now is $30", then he would have countered with $45, you could have countered with $35, he would then agree to split the difference at $40 and you could have made the deal there!

Always offer an amount lower than what you're willing to finally pay as your first offer. It's fun to haggle. Remember, the worst they can do is tell you "no".

the 720 is a great knife, I'm not too partial on serrations but if thats ok with you then get it. And the action on my 720 is indeed stiffer then all the other BMs I have (stiff but still smooth)

BTW...The BEST way to buy anything in a pawn shop is to figure-out the very top price that you are willing to pay for something ahead of time, then empty-out your wallet of all money except for the amount that you are willing to pay before you enter the pawn shop. Then open your wallet so that the clerk can see, and pull out "all" of your money (mostly ones and fives), and tell the clerk that this is ALL the money you have, but that you REALLY want to buy the item from them.

Well, I went back in today and we agreed on $45 plus tax. I never have been any good at haggling. But I believe I came out pretty good on this one. The owner knows I'm a knife nut so in some ways that already puts me at a disadvantage to haggle, especially when the knife is the only quality piece in his case and he knows it too. Thanks for all the advice. Best.

That's a steal for that knife. Who cares if you couldn't haggle another 5 smackers off of the price? Congratulations Kimberholic!

Sounds like you got a great deal! That's a great knife for $45.

Ya done good man!:D

It looks like you scored a very good knife, and at $5 off the marked price. You did well, and now you can save that "extra" $5 for your next purchase there.:).

Congrats, you got a good deal.

Tell us if the stiff action could be loosened by applying a little oil.
