Surefire lithium 123 batteries, should I hold onto them, or get rid of them? Are they rechargeable? For that matter, what about Energizer 123 lithium batteries?

Sorry, they're dead.

are they new or used?

Put them in something, but they are not rechargable.

If they're dead, take them to Bestbuy, Radioshack, or any other place that has battery disposal bins. Lithium batteries are quite toxic to the environment, so don't just throw them away.

Original post edited to reflect that these batteries are dead. So, sitting on my shelf over top of my water bottle is a bad idea, huh?

A lot of times people will pay the shipping for dead CR123A batteries (seen on:candlepowerforums.com). Maybe post a thread and see if anyone wants them?

I find that the batteries that go dead in my Surefire will still work (in the other flashlight whose name is escaping me at the moment) for quite some time. So, I have a pile of "Surefire dead" and really really dead ones.

My Inova X5 puts out a very usable amount of light on cells that don't even register on a battery tester. If you are so inclined, pick up an X5 or something similar, and see if they can be used further untill they are truely dead.

i have always just thrown mine away lol, didnt know it was bad, i guess i might take them to radio shack or soemwhere to dispose of them from now on but i wouldnt pay to do it, IIRC some places wanna charge ya to do that now if ya didnt buy the batts from them or buy new ones from them.

My Inova will use batteries that my SF deem dead. So, I have a pile of dead batteries too.
