It is always a hard decision on whether to cut up a complete tusk.If it were not blue I would for sure leave it alone.A young Eskimo friend sent it in a few days ago.It is nine feet long and weighs 96 pounds. It would yeld 60 to 70 sets of good blue scales plus some interior ivory for other projects. It would be a lot easier to leave it whole and sell it to a collector.

ok,
I am speaking as a business man, but you will want to really research your decision.
It could be worth a small fortune either way.

All I see is handle material! Cut it up! Sorry, that what I would do.
Do the math and see where U can get the most $$ out of it.

Thanks for the input. I think I have it sold to a customer who makes a lot of very high end knife sets.He is not known in custom knife circles but has a group of billionares and millionare that he makes knives for.
I understand at the shows sets of scales with good color are going for over $100 per set.I do not have any customers for price range.I have bought over two thousand pounds of ivory this year and find that only abot 10% is what I would call exceptional.I guess that I should start doing shows. It is hard to buy ivory with out touching it.

I'm with dave here,,,hate to see something that may never be seen again lost to consumerism,,,just my opinion.

Out of the hundreds of tusks that I have bought and sold I do not beleave that I have ever cut up complete specimen tusk. For the last three years before he died I met Rick Fields in Tucson at the Gem Show.I will never forget the reaction of the collectors and dealers as he cut up some perfect small Sibeian tusks. There is actually more of a shortage of blue ivory than complete tusks.I still would have a hard time cutting one up.

that is one of the biz desisions we all have to make. it sounds like the full tusk buyer will cut it up. shows are the best way because buyers can touch it. but you can also let them send it back no questions. traveling to shows eats about half you profit. but i think you could do alittle more investigation because i belive that that color of blue my fetch up to twice that $100 a set of scales you mentioned?
best of luck!

I sure wouldn't cut that!

I understand it's your and maybe that potential buyer's decision, but that's just neat as heck to see such a huge piece of blue.

It reminds me of a set of mule deer horns my cousin-in-law found. They were on a dead mule deer (very very old age) he found while hunting. He kept them for a short while and asked if I wanted to cut them up for handles. When he brought the rack over, I couldn't believe it. It has something like 12 points on one side and 15 on the other, and it's absolutely stunning. Did I cut it up? Heck no! But I sure did keep it.

Somethings are better left alone ;)

Just my 2 bits.
