Should I cut up an old misery whip saw blade?

I'm asking this in traditional since if I did it, it would be for a traditional knife. I have an old two person saw blade that was my great grandfathers.
I have thought about cutting off a piece of one end and having a knife made out of it. Is this heresy? I would keep the rest of it for sentimental value
in my garage and then I could carry a piece of it with me. What do you all think? I haven't contacted a knife maker to even know if this is doable, I've
just been thinking about it.

Thanks for your time,
Trey

Trey -I'm in a similar situation. I have a lot of my grandads old tools which I have kept faithfully over the years since he died.
There are some which still work eg the chisels. I also have this saw which is made in Sheffield. It has an adjustable angle handle(the kind of gimmickry he went for). The teeth are blunt.I have better newer saws(which I hardly ever use either).
To put it bluntly(haha) it is clutter that I don't need and I would like to cut a knife of some sort out of this sawblade.
I know if he were alive today he would own a compound mitre saw and the old sheffield one would be in the bin.
I say go for it.

I would keep this one as an hierloom type thing, clean it up,maybe new handles. If not for the decor inside your house,I've seen them out on a garage,or ? Paintings on them,or how about the house number painted on.
For dabbling in making something seek out parts, you are liable to wreck out ,on trial. Also Alan Davis knife maker, does alot with this. I bet if you contacted him ,he'd help you out, about what you need to know Have fun

I believe Alan Davis??? a paying maker on this site makes more traditional style knives with a Misery Whip blade. In any case I say go for it, you said it best.....

I don't know but some of those old saws weren't an even thickness from top to bottom but were tapered. Something to be aware of if you do it.

I'm not sure who it is either but there is definitely a maker here on BF that has made a few fixed blades from Misery Whip steel, I'm sure he could help you out with it or maybe you could order one of his? So then you'd still have the complete saw AND a knife made from one. ;)

I've had it hanging in the garage wall for at least thirty years, alongside an old scythe from the same great-grandfather. I thought about making new handles, all the bolts are there but I never saw any good reason to. He also had an old anvil that disappeared. I like the idea of just leaving the finish on the steel except for the bevel. Maybe a friction folder?
