Should I get a Benchmade 810 Contego?

Hey. I need some input on whether or not I should grab an 810 contego. From what I've read and see on reviews, its definitely a solid knife. But is it worth the money, and is there another knife I should consider for the money?

It was definitely worth it at $120-$130. At $180 or whatever it is now...it's a decent knife, but that cost jump is hard to swallow.

It's a good knife, but I would personally wait until you see it on the exchange or the 'bay for $100-130. For the price it's going for now, I'd personally just get an 581 M390 barrage.

I had a Contego and promptly traded it away. The F&F was perfectly fine and the action was superb on the knife. However, just a word of caution....the knife has aggressive jimping on the g10 scales and can be uncomfortable for prolonged use (or any use really, LOL). And I, by no means, have delicate or soft hands. It was a knife, iirc, that was designed for use with gloves, which makes sense considering the sharp edges of the scales. YMMV, just my two cents...

I do not get the handle shape. I looked at it when it was more affordable and have never pulled the trigger even then and have no regrets about it. I agree with Comeuppance: Barrage 581 with M390 blade looks like much better knife for the similar amount of money.

Its a great knife. if you like it, buy it. If you have time, wait for on the exchange and get a better price.
Its on the large side, so if your on the fence that could be an issue. Its too large for my edc, but that didn't stop me from getting one!

If you like the way it looks and enjoy large knives, go for it. I always held off because I don't want non-stainless blades in my modern folders; I then snagged the M390 edition. The first time I handled it, I was in awe of its beastliness. The opening/closing action is like a giant 940.

I haven't handled an M4 version but have read that the handle sharpness is toned down in the M390 edition. It is a very comfortable knife in my hand.

Good luck in your decision.

Benchmade 810 Contego vs. 950 Rift: link. I'm more of a Rift guy, as it has essentially the same blade in a more pocket-friendly, hand-friendly format, but manly men who do stuff like smash car windows with their knives will like the Contego better.

Thanks for the link, noodle! I always enjoy reading your stuff

I sold mine, not a bad knife, but I'm waiting for a CF version with M390 or S90v, I'll buy in a heart beat.

Thank you so much for the input guys. I really appreciate it. I really don't worry much about ergo's. Its the strenkth of the lock up and I generally carry a 4" folder anyway. Until now I've been carrying the Smith&Wesson Border guard, but its developed a nasty case of Lock rock. I think I am going to jump on the M390 version. Thanks again!!

Thanks man. Love that blue G10. Absolutely breathtaking.

Good choice on the Contego 810-1401 with M390 steel blade and less aggressive jimping on the nice-looking G-10 scales. It's only available this year and only $13 more the standard Contego.

Okay then its final. The minute I have the money, im Jumping on the M390 model. Thanks again for all the input guys.

I have an 810 Contego and absolutely love it, I'm currently trying to sell to fund the M390 version. It's an awesome daily carry knife.

The Contego is my favorite knife by far. It just fits my hand better than anything I own. You can see in the pic above the scales are way rougher on my black 810 than on my M390. The jimping on my M390 is toned down a bit, too. I actually prefer the rougher scales so I may swap them over to my M390 since I carry that one most of the time.
