Hey guys...and gals,
I am about ready to buy my next custom and am considering one of Tom Mayo's knives. Ever since I have gotten into the customs, Mayo's have been at the top of the list, even though I have not had the chance to handle any, from what I have read and pics I have seen they appear to be awesome. So this is for all of yall who have taken the plunge and have person experience with these knives:
do you daily carry your mayo
tell me about there fit, finish, ergonomics, blade, ect.
is there anything you dont like about them
does Tom take special orders
and finally I love the timascus look but am unfamiliar with this process, any info would be greatly appreciated, and I would love to see some pics of your users. Thanks alot.

I prefer Best Foods (west coast), but if you live in the Eastern or Mid-regions of the U.S., maybe you could get Hellmans?
Don't really care for Miracle Whip...

Seriously though - Mayo folders are excellent - I'm partial to any that have the blade hole vs. the thumb stud for opening.

Regards,
Mike

I'll say what you want to hear. Get one i've never held one before but its a custom from Mayo and it has to be good.

I have 2. They are my favorite knives that I own and I have alot of customs from some of the biggest makers. That being said, on the aftermarket they go for big $ so I really dont carry them. For some reason when they get much over a certain price point I just cant seem to put a knife in the pocket.
Get one. You will be happy.

I would love to try a tip up Mayo, sadly it seems there are not that many.

I have never owned a Tom Mayo knife , I have however , handled a bunch , and have the pleasure of calling Tom a friend. It is the one knife that has eluded me , but someday , a small to medium tip up Mayo will be my EDU..... one of these days...and the wait will be darn well worth it. A solid knife that will not let you down , from a maker who certainly does not disappoint.

Yes, DO get yourself a Mayo!! Tom makes an incredible knife; smooth & sharper than sharp!! I DO own 2.

NO! Whatever you do don't get a Mayo!!:grumpy:

That leaves more for us!:p

EDC is a TMX with Ti frame and carbon fiber inlays. Blade is a CPM 154 with a recurve grind. I like the blade and the knife is great ergonomically. Right size for me.

You mention timascus bolsters etc, not really a EDC but more of a collectible if you can get one. Huge premium for the Dr Death's etc on the secondary market.

Very smooth and solid knives that feel as good, if not better, than they look. The fit, finish and quality are top notch. The handle ergos have always been a good fit for me. So, yeah, I'd recommend them wholeheartedly. :)

The TNT is a good place to start, available in a nice range of sizes. And if you didn't like it for some reason you shouldn't have any problem reselling or trading it.

I've said it before and I will say it again: that folder would look mighty good with some wood inlay, or better yet mammoth ivory inlay.

Nice knife, nice pic RNST!

Kind regards,

Jos

Mayo knives are good for your health. This is the past thread ... good information (will answer ergo, fit and finish etc): http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=528112&highlight=mayo.

My opinion:
For EDC: medium mayo, dr death jr, TMX (either midtech or custom). If you like beefy ones ... there are 4.25" (XL) and 5" (T-Rex) blades.
For Concealed Carry: small mayos (blades are under 3 "), covert mayos - very snugly and awesome ... but they are hard to find.
For Carried in salty water: covert mayos (mostly in medium size) .... there are in full ti and half CF / half ti ... very very very hard to find too in secondary market. Covert is amazing coz totally rust proof .... the blade is in 6K and the rest of components are Ti ... even the screws.

Tom does not take any orders ... but ... you can ask him ... who knows :)

Lastly ... Tom is one of coolest knifemakers .. although sometimes he is grumpy hehehehehehe ....; To me ... knifemaker's characters influence (60%) my buying decision for my collection. Another thing I like, all his knives are "truly" handmade-stock removal (except TMX midtech - components're cut by CNC but fit and finish and blade ground by his hands) ... a collector in hawaii told me:
I've watched him make knives many times at his house and he is a craftsman and perfectionist. his knives are ground symmetrically free hand and the fit and finish is perfect. while some knives require "break-in", his do not and are always smooth and lock up perfectly.

I do like timascus mayosss alot .. I manage to put some on my album:

I'll play, I've got three custom Mayo's and one of them is in the EDC rotation. It's a small (2.75 inch) w/talonite blade. I've had it about 4 years now and it's still as smooth as the day I got and the lockup is still perfect as well. You can't go wrong with a Mayo, they are well worth the money if you appreciate a fine knife.

Forgot, these are purveyors that usually have Tom's folders: arizonacustomknives.com (Julie), steeladdictionknives.com (Dave), theknifecellar.com (Phillip), bladeart.com (Larry / Caro), robertsoncustomcutlery.com (Les), ebosshoss.com (Jon).
