Should I get a Sog Trident?

Hi forum, I'm very new to this sort of thing but figure I'd give it a try anyway. Recently I've been shopping around for a new medium/large EDC knife and after looking at a few options I have been coming back to the SOG Trident, TiNi Tanto version. Could someone who owns or has owned one tell me a little bit about the performance and feel of the knife, as well as any key things that might annoy a user about it, such as blade play or bad handle feel.

Thanks, Marc.

I wouldn't get it - I had a Trident Tanto and it was my first Sog. While the knife came sharp and the assisted opening worked, after a while horrible blade-play occured (side/side, up/down) and I couldn't get rid of it without seriously slowing down the opening speed of the mechanism.

Sog's customer service was virtually non-existent as they never returned my phone calls nor emails. I simply had no further use for that knife.

I've heard of many other people having the same problems with blade play and customer service. Maybe it's better by now, but I'm not spending my hard earned money on another non-USA product just to "try it over." You don't get a second chance at a first impression.

You'd be much better off using that $80 and getting something that's made in the USA, with quality materials, steel, design, engineering, and customer service behind the product. Anything from Kershaw/Spyderco/Benchmade will do you a whole lot of good compared to the Sog. I personally recommend getting a basic Kershaw Blur or Junkyard Dog Composite blade for that kind of money.

Welcome to bladeforums - keep an open mind and learn as much as you can. Your wallet is going to not have as much fun though :)

Thanks for the advice, i was hearing mixed feeling from Youtubers (nutnfancy specificly), if I did not end up getting the Trident then my second choice was defiantly the Cold Steel Recon 1 (tanto of course). It also seemed to be right about in the same price range, probably because they both use the same type of steel. However steel has never been something im too picky about. What im really after is solid lockup and a good feel.

Again, that Recon is going to have AUS-8 steel and I've been hearing many people say that theirs is rather soft. If all you want is something that will cut, then go for it though :)

I have a Sog Trident, and a Cold Steel Recon, and you will be much more happy with the Cold Steel Recon.
