Should I give up the collection?

I'm down to the last two models of having every Kershaw Skyline ever produced. I need the Snap On and Ducks Unlimited models but they are now affectionately called 'Phoenix' and 'Unicorn' because both are mythical and must be made of living breathing unobtainium.
Every one I have is new (missing a few common boxes and the clam shell on the orange model) but never used, carried, or sharpened.
I'm at the crossroads - I would love to put the damascus in my edc rotation, and would really love to edc the Blue (1 of 64) S30V model. Alas, as soon as I decide to use one, the Unicorn will show up in my front yard with the Phoenix perched squarely on it's back.
OR, am I living in Fantasy Land and will never find the SO and DU models.
If the experts here say I'll never get the other two, I'll believe them and put the others in my pocket and get some use out of them (for what I paid for some of them, it would be ashamed not to use them and show them off - :D)
Alright BF geniuses (literally), are the 1760 Snap On and 1760 Ducks Unlimited models unobtainable?????

1. Why are you collecting them?
2. Does carrying some of them mess up your answer to question 1?

I think you should be designating some to carry. Don't you have dupes of any of the ones you want to carry?

Check my sig. I'm looking for 1 of 5. I bet I find it within another year.

However every knife I have is either in my EDC rotation or the 'occasional' carry. Seems ashamed to have tools for cutting and never let them fulfill their purpose.

This is a more general response, but many of us have that grail knife (mine is a Scott Cook Lochsa with damascus blade) that we are constantly on the lookout for but may never find. That does not keep me from enjoying the rest of my small collection.

So I would say hang on to your collection and enjoy it, and enjoy the hunt for the seemingly unobtainable. You never know when they will fall in your lap.

And I recommend creating a signature line with your WTB grails: one of my previous signature lines elicited a lot of responses over time.

There were a lot more of the Blue S30V models made than 64, I think we have about 200 of those total.

I started out buying a few to carry and was going to add them to my edc rotation. Suddenly I got real interested in the collection of all of them when I got a red and orange model. I found and bought every one and never carried any yet. I will buy some dupes to carry but I do have some of the rare ones except these two that are left.

Good to know. Either way I love it and happy I have one. Somewhere in an old thread was the number 64. 200 or 2000 is all the same to me. Love having one in S30V. Thanks for the info

BTW, is that the Blue Forum Model or the Blue SW model. My understanding was there were 500 (or maybe 600) Blue Forum models made in S30V and I read they had blue scales left over and made 64 stonewashed versions until they ran out of blue scales. The SW blades were obviously plentiful at the time.

The 1 of 64 blue sw was a blade hq exclusive made from parts of leftover bfc skylines. They also had satin hardware, and a stonewash 14c28n hallow grind blade. The BFC had black hardware, stonewash s30V steel with a flat ground blade. There were about 500 BFC versions.

There are many people that have looked for years to find that one blade they were missing. I'd hold out awhile longer. The red snap-on's pop up about once a year. The Ducks unlimited are much more rare. I know someone who has been looking for a looong time for it. He'd pay a pretty penny just for that one to pretty much complete his collection. But he is still looking and did not give up.

An example is the Unicorn Blur. The purple blur was once thought to be unobtainable. There were like 3 known in existence of a supposed 600. Out of nowhere 3 popped up on the bay a few months ago. They were made in 2003. People waited that long to finally have a chance at owning one.

Moral is patience pays off. Don't give up!

Don't throw in the towel yet, HS. Also, how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go? Do you have the "1 of 500" First Production Skyline as well? There's a real unicorn out there of a camo handled Skyline too. I hope that doesn't dash your hopes and maybe sparks some further interest, but put what you are looking for in your sig and see what happens.

Didn't know about the FPR of 500. I didn't know they existed. Are the blades marked FPR and numbered?
I did see the digi camo but my understanding is that the scales were made by someone and put on the original 1760 model. I have some G10 in Jade Green I'm going to use for a standard 1760 when I get time. I was certain the digi camo was like that and not designated on the blade from Kershaw. Am I right? Or is there a 1760DC (digi camo) version with a model number on the blade?
YOU GUYS ARE MAKING THIS FUN!
This is why I joined. Very nice.

I actually believe the digicamo was a proto way back when the skyline first came out. Nobody bit so it never made it into production. I think a very small amount of sales sample protos were pobably made. I missed out on one for an absolute steal about 6 months ago. The FPR is marked on the blade as such.

My observation is that with the advent of the internet, people have become less patient with collecting.

30 years ago, you would have been hard pressed to get a small percentage of the collection you currently enjoy - you would have had to scour knife and gun shows and newspaper ads, garage sales, etc.

The real joy in collecting is the chase, not the having, although the having is nice too.

Enjoy your collection, and enjoy the chase!

You don't get a special prize for collecting them all...and most likely they will produce more limited edition ones in the future, which you might not be able to obtain, meaning collecting all of the variations will be very difficult. If you enjoy it then keep collecting them. If you want to use a skyline pick up a regular production model. There's no reason to use rare ones with special colors because they won't perform any better than a regular model and you'll diminish their collector value. I understand using limited edition knives with special steel or whatever, but using a red skyline is going to be the same as using a blue or a black one if the steel is identical. If you're tired of collecting them then sell them all off for a profit and collect something new.

Keep at it, Hale Storm; I have!

I have a decent Skyline collection going, but I am missing the Ducks Unlimited and the First Production models (also the 1760CKT that the Canadian dealer had an exclusive on, but I had Frankensk'lined one for myself months before those came out). I have a few that I made up from blade swaps including the aforementioned 1760CKT, two 1760BRN's (tan scales/bead-blast blade), and a 1760ORCKT (orange scales/DLC blade). I was lucky enough to get a 1760RDSO from Kershawguy when he had some (quite a while back).

As far as carrying them, the 1760OR was my constant companion around the house, but I just turned that one into the 1760ORCKT (still have a 1760OR new in the package), so now it will be one of my 1760BRN Frankensk'lines. I do have two 1760DAM's, but haven't carried my extra one... yet!

Anyway, have fun with them! They are way more affordable than a lot of other models that are collected (like Blurs and Leeks; luckily I have not caught the fever for those yet).

One of my goals was to get 1 of every variation of 1219C2, aka the USN/USMC MK2. I started in 1976 and would find a new one every now and then.

Then the internet and fleabay were born. My goal became a reality when after waiting and looking and searching for the elusive MSI version, (there were only 5998 made and they were apparently sent to Okinawa around 1984.), one popped up finally on they bay and I hopped on it like a chicken on a June bug. In the last 6 months, I've seen 4 more (same ones maybe).

So just keep looking and waiting and while you do, start collecting something different to feed the addiction. I started on Western knives and then bayonets. The fun is in the chase.

I am insane and collect the Leeks. There are many that I don't have yet and that I am still looking for. I have EDC's and NIB versions of many knives, so I keep the collection intact and abuse my EDC'ers. Just when I think I won't find any of the ones I am missing, one pops up. I say buy some users and beat them up so you can keep the collection intact.

My Accumulation is diverse enough that if I get stumped on finding a particular knife or bored with some particular brand, it's easy to enough to re-focus elsewhere or, better yet, try something new.
