Should I oil the inner working of folding knives?

Actually it will do both. If you clean and oil regularly you won't have any problems. Preventive maintainance.

I would suggest that you look into Tuf-Glide for your lubricating needs on your knives.

From the Sentry Soluttions website;

"TUF-GLIDE™ penetrates hard to access areas and displaces water. It provides cleaning, rust protection and lubrication. Pure mineral spirits carries the active ingredients and provides cleaning action. It evaporates, and Sentry's proprietary ingredients bond to the surface; this bonding ensures long-lasting effectiveness.

TUF-GLIDES' waterproof protection will not wash off and won't thicken in the cold (even down to -40°F/-40°C).

It will not attract dirt like oil-based products, nor is it a slippery film like silicone. It is great to use on wood and is safe for most plastics."

It's the only stuff that I use, and I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. ;)

You don't need a whole lot of oil either! In Bob Terzuola's folder book, he says to put a drop of oil on a toothpick, apply that to the pivot, and then wipe off the excess! Your knife need not be soaking in oil.

What Crayola said in spades.

I don't have everyday access to the newer high-end lubes. So Breakfree in the non-aerosol squeeze bottle works for me, one drop on the hinge pivot and immediately wipe off the excess.

Every once in awhile I'll hose em out with WD40, and use 120 lbs instrument air to blow the crud and excess oil out. Great way to clean them out if you have the air.

I also use White Lightning

They are perfect for me.

WD-40 isn't nice when it drips all over the place in your pocket and collects dust with the residue...

USE MILTEC! It doesn't collect debris, crud and other pocket crap plus you only need to do it once or twice in a year if you open and close it about 300 times a day.

I can remember the days that WD40 was d'man as far a lubes go.

In mine mind now days it best used to degunk (is that a word?) and to blow out the gunk. I as soon as I can get some MILTEC hauled down here I plan on giving it a try.

I use Rem-Oil, and for compressed air goes I use the canned air you can buy at Wally World or any office supply store. Works for me, so far.

You have some good advice! Most people way over-lube their knives/gus etc.

All the stuff mentioned is great stuff (although I don't like White Lightening at all for anything), but if you are keeping your knife clean.., and using lubricant sparingly (removing excesses).., you'll be fine...

TheMightyGoat,

if WD40 dripped into your pocked after applying it to a knife, you applied WAY too much. Usually I apply a lubricant that I use on my bike chain- it is a "dry" lube with silicone in it, IIRC. To apply it I gently press the spray nozzle for a split second. There is a slight fssszt sound and then a drop or 2 of the lube comes out of the tube. I drip that drop into the pivot area of my knife, work the pivot a dozen times, and wipe off the excess. Try doing that with WD40 if that is all you have.
