Should I or shouldn't I (mod the Southard)?

So the color of the g10 on my Southard is bugging me. I want to change it (dye it) but I'd like to know your opinion on the effect that would make on valuation.

Would a modified Southard still be appealing to you (assuming it was tasteful) or would you pass on it in search of a fully "stock" one?

At this point the knife is completely unused.

Thanks as always, Striga

Aww man, that's a tough one...
On one hand, you get to mod your personal blade and make it an expression of your personal taste. On the other hand, if you plan on reselling it, it automatically looses value.
If i liked the mod, i wouldn't beat you up on price but there are buyers who don't even like a resharpening! A dye job on G-10 isn't a bad mod... I've seen some nice Para 2's ruined by some bad "skulls" airbrushing (notice i said BAD airbrushing)
I have a couple of G-10 Delicas and one of them was dyed black (not by me, by the previous owner)... It was a great dye job and I paid just as much for that one as i did for my foliage G-10 one. I think you'll be safe on resale but it just may take a few days longer to have the right buyer notice it.... The Southard is one hell of a knife regardless of the scale color.

Selling it as a user should not change the value too much. However selling it new with a dyed handle might be lower value, but some people do not like the brown handle so something different may leave the value unchanged. Depends on the buyer, in my opinion.

Im all for doing a custom Grip on the Southard! Benchmades first flipper they did a multi colored scale that looks pretty cool! Im actually thinking of changing my Southard as well so if you do it let me know! I may have you do mine!! Its an awesome knife but the plain brown is kinda boring IMO!

Couldn't help myself.

I looked over Brads custom stuff and decided that this dark green wasn't out of line in terms of what he might like. Looks good to me. Maybe a bit darker in person.

Yeah, I think it all depends on the quality of the dye job. If it looks professional, and the color is decent, it could be a plus. But if the job is not professional-looking, it will hurt valuation. In my opinion. Your job looks like a factory job, and should add value. Kudos on the dye job.

Blue southard *DROOL*

I don't think it will affect the value at all....I love it!!

The Southard is a regular production knife so I can't imagine that it will have a lot of collector's value.
I expect that the future value will depend more on the condition of the knife than the color.

I'd probably pay a bit more for that one, honestly. (assuming it was in equal condition to another stock handled)

looks good, as others have said as long as the job is done correct and looks good , I wouldn't think the value would go down at all, as an alternative , you could always get custom g-10 scales made for it instead of dying it, too late now, but you coulda just got someone to make you some more g-10 scales and just replace the stock ones , then if you were to sell it then you put the stock ones back on and offer 2 scales when or if you sell, but the dye job looks great.

Looks good! I'd pay going rate for that one.... No problem! You did a very nice job and in my humble opinion only narrowed your purchasing audience slightly. A blue clip and some blue anodized Ti standoffs and DAAAAYYYYUUUMM! Not that it needs those mods but you seem to be on a bit of a tear.

Again, nice job!

Thanks guys :)

I didn't really mean long term value, nor cash. I mostly trade as I did with this one. I'm really happy to hear that you guys like it though.

One thing. It's really hard to get an accurate photo of. My wife says it's between a green and a blue.

I took a couple of pics outside on a green microfiber towel. I think these are more accurate.

Thanks for your comments!

Brown is my favorite G-10, but I only like muted colors.
It seems I'm in the minority on that though.
You did a really great job:thumbup:
