I have the basic sharp maker set up and was wondering if I should purchase additional rods? Thanks in advance for your time and patience.

The CBN stones are very worth it, IMO, if you do any reprofiling at all on your Sharpmaker. They'll make it much less of a headache. The ultrafine stones can be nice if you're really looking to polish an edge up, but for any basic cutting tasks, the provides stones are more than sufficient.

For me having the diamond rods and the ultra-fine rods made it a much more versatile tool.

Depending on what steel your sharpening. Also if you do get them, use them very light so you don't knock the diamond off.

But yes, steel that's got 3-4% Vanadium or more or hrc 61+ makes the job of re profiling faster.

I have the ultra-fine rods, but find a diamond stone a little more desirable than diamond rods. And the stone can be used with the SM as well if you just set it against the rods.
