Should I or Shouldn't I

I just realized the 124 i bought last week has been re-tipped and am wondering if Buck can re-blade it if I send it in. I know they can't re-blade a 119 but considering the handle on a 124 has pins, maybe they can. There's 1/2 inch missing from the blade length.

Are you sure it's been shortened? I just measured three of mine and they measure from 6 5/8" to 7" in blade length.

The radius of the blade doesn't look right and it measures 6 1/2 inches. BTW, dang, you're up early. Here's a picture of the radius. It looks too rounded. The date code is 1996.

Yeah, and I've been up since 2:30! Just woke up and couldn't go back to sleep.

You're right, the second picture looks like it's been reshaped. Rebladed? I'd contact Buck and ask. I have it from a person who seems to know, that there are some new 124's coming out as a special projects for some vendor. It's possible that Buck could have new blades and they might also have some of the polished blades left over from a stag handled LE that they came out with in '06.

I'm betting it would cost alot more than getting a new blade for a 110 though! The blade in a 124 is pretty much the whole knife.

Cost-wise, it doesn't seem worth it.

You can hardly tell anything's been done to the blade.

You could probably just send it to me if you don't like it.

I'd give it a good home.

:D

Mitch, I don't think they would re-blade it... But you can always call and ask... It looks good to me... Good Luck... ITE ...

I don't have a 124 to compare it with but one is posted on the Picture Show. I would say it has been redone but saying that I don't think it looks bad at all. I am sure it would be better to find another than have it rebladed. I would keep this one as a rounded version and the other as the pointy version. There is always BG42EDGE's offer for a good home.

There is no re blade to a fixed blade knife. The blade and handle area are all one piece. The new 124's are not the full tang style like the 124 you have in the photo above. So the new blades are not a swap out option and the replacement would cost the same as buying a new 124. So I say use the one you have with the short blade and find another one.

Does anyone know what the blades measured in 96? If it ends up only being 1/8-1/4 inch, I got no gripe about that. I was able to sharpen it last night with no difficulty so it won't be a bad idea to keep it.

My '91 and '06 LE both measure 6 3/4". My standard factory pre-86 micarta measure's 6 5/8" and my pre-86 wood handled one measure's at 7". The 1996 Catalog says it's 6 7/8".

Mitch, Jb4570 is right... I would just keep it and use it... Buy a different one for your Collection... Now if you don't want it, you can always send it to me for safe keeping... ITE ... ;)

I just found one on ebay that looks like mine except for approximately 1/8 inch right at the tip. The auction number is 320605713404 and ends in 45 min.

Mitch, JB is correct, not possible to reblade . However, I measured mine (a 93) and from its length I'd say yours was missing 1/8-3/16" at the most . Beside I like the shape of your tip just as well as most any 124 . Use it and enjoy your knife . I hope the price reflected the modification . DM

I grabbed 7 random 124's I had in the archives and measured the blade from the face of the guard to the tip.
4 were right at 6 3/4" and the other 3 were right at 6 5/8". No ryhm or reason when considering the date codes either in fact, one of the longer ones was black micarta. Its a mystery.
