So I’m from Melbourne, Australia and I’ve recently started looking at buying a balisong.

I’ve read everywhere that it’s illegal to own a balisong in Australia and I’m presuming that it’s just a balisong with a blade, I’m just wondering if I’m able to get a trainer without getting in trouble because I think it would be cool to learn but I’d rather not have to get into a whole situation with police

Or maybe get a pen.
I would say out of all my spyderco purchases, the Baliyo (35$ one) is the ONLY one I regretted. It flipped terrible, and the pen broke after maybe 1 week of use. Would not recommend.

If you are really inclined to get one, buy some golfer tape to weigh the handles...trust me.

Also, dont get those Glidr training ones...the screws they use are SHEEEET. Flips okay, but I bought two and both came with stripped pivots.

Also don't buy the Artisan kinetic tool. I know how every retailer says it's not gimmicky...but having owned 2 let me tell you its gimmicky. Also it flips terrible and has more play than a hooker.

Also I think squid industries and BRS are super overpriced. Everyone loves them though and would happily shell out the butterfly tax.

So what DO I recommend?

Kershaw Lucha Trainer. Heavy, but build well and decently priced.

Boker balisong trainers. Theres a few, find one with a good review and shoot since they're so cheap.

I wonder if they'd let you get a Maxace that comes dissembled or with training blade pre-attached...all maxace come with both.

If you want a premium one (and can find it), I'd recommend one from HOM, Benchmade, Microtech, I also think the WE Nerve Balicomb flips EXCEPTIONALLY well for what it is.

You can also get Konstantine over at Atroposknife to make you one, his balisongs all flip really good.

As you can see, this is a passionate subject for me lol, be happy to talk your ears off.

Who am I kidding, you're gonna end up with a Squid or BRS...

G'day mate,

Trainers are legal as far as I know, plenty of aussie sellers on Ebay so no customs concerns.

I bought a real cheap one for about $15 that fell apart, then spent about $30 & it is fine for mucking around.

Happy flipping.

I had the next "tier" up of Boker bali (closer to $50 USD) and it was solid for the price. It gave me enough of a taste to convince me that I should invest in a more expensive trainer, and it was leagues ahead of the random, anonymous $10 trainer off Amazon that I started with.
