Should I pick up a 586 first run?

I am looking for a sub 3" folder and this checks a lot of the boxes. It does however look a lot like my HK14200. Not a big deal, but for some reason I like each of my knives to look different.

I am also interested in the knife because I can pick it up for $150 which seems like a great deal. Is there any additional value to having a first run knife?

From what I've read the 586 seems to be very well liked. Any downsides to the knife? Or one you'd rather have instead?

Thanks.

Honestly between me and you that Snody you already have is beautiful and would never come out of my pocket, but the barrage is great I haven't heard any downsides to it personally. And firsts runs are more of a feel good thing cause you have a "collectible" even though they are still the same production model the first run is usually numbered for exclusivity.

There's no difference in value between the numbered first and the final unkmarked full production versions. The only ones that keep and increase in worth are the prototype runs. Your 154CM 14200 is a great knife and a keeper, different in build to the M390 586 (which are assisted Axis only.) Between the two I'd rather have yours. :D

Good points, guys. The other one I am considering is a presidio 525. I've found a 525SBK new in stock, and since it is discontinued it may be a better purchase since it will be completely gone soon. I had my eye on that knife for years but never got around to purchasing one. I'd love just a plain 525, not black or serrated, but I cannot find any in stock anywhere.

Would you rather have a 525 or a 586?

Personally I'd get a 586 and then de-assist it.

I just got a 525bk last week and I've owned a 940 for a few years. In my opinion the 525 is a far superior knife. The blade shape, length and angle are much better suited to edc chores than the 940. The axis springs are stronger, the detent is deeper, it feels more solid and in hand looks a bit less sinister (satin not black) than the 940 does.

The only thing I'd change about the 525 is the burly texture on the clip side. I've heard it will eat your pants. I have some custom cuscadis on the way.

I imagine the mini barrage would be similar. I just didn't want the extra mechanisms included for assisted.

586 feels like it's gonna squirt out of my hand-- you want to get some real work done w/ a small knife, get the 525 (own many). Only 3" BM I've handled that comes close is the Snody 14210-- sounds like you've got a version of that.

"First Prod Run" printed on any blade is just annoying garbola in my book. Adds no value.

First Production has higher perceived value to some (we get requests for it and sometimes someone will return one that doesn't have it on the blade because they thought it should) but I don't think it should.

It comes off the same tooling and programming as the next runs AND subsequent runs have the chance of having subtle tweaks to make them better. Doesn't happen often, but It does happen.

Oh. And the 586 is a cool knife. I have one on my desk I just can't put down. I haven't put one in my pocket yet. :)
