So I've been experimenting with heat "anodizing" since yesterday, and these are my results so far:

So my question is: Should I do this with my Iron Dragon?

Though I extremely happy with my results, I am hesitant to jump in with the I.D. Part of the attraction (IMHO) of the I.D. is the simple, non cluttered elegance of the design.

On the other hand, I could make it "uniquely my own".

What do y'all think?

I think you do a nice job with that and it looks great, but ultimately it's up to you, if your hesitant maybe you shouldn't as the knife does already look nice, but that's a cool color scheme on them ones you pimped

I can't let you do it. Okay do it. Wait. Don't, you might regret it. Just do the pocket clip.

Does the heat hurt the functionality? How does that work?

It does not affect the functionality in any way. I do it on the stovetop. Just put the titanium slab on the burner and turn it on. Med-high heat achieves a nice bronze, and higher heat gives the blu and purple highlights. It takes about 5-10 minutes. The stainles steel parts, like hardware and pocket clips, vill achieve a bronze color at high heat (it will affect heat treat, so DO NOT do this with the blade ot heat treated pivots). It can also be done with a propane torch.

I have wondered this myself as i have ano'ed a bunch of ti stuff but it will void warranty and you cant really get it back to the stock finish in my view.

But yeah man its up to you..if you asked me i would say no as they are getting rare ...just my humble opinions

I always heat color titanium with a propane torch when I can. I've done it to a ZT0777 and several other of my knives. I also had my ZT0620 anodized with a blue digicamo pattern.

So my vote is yes!

This is another of my concerns. Will it void the warranty, and they are a little rare.

I'd really like to get Rayster's opinion.

My opinion! Well... I will say the the ano jobs you have done look great. Certainly unique and truly your own.

Coloring up the Iron Dragon will indeed void the warranty as that counts as a modification. How's the lock been behaving? Early? Consistent and hasn't worn much or have you not played with it like some guys with their clicky pens?

That's pretty dang cool that you can do that on a stove top, looks really nice, although if the iron dragon is rare I wouldnt and its probably not worth voiding a warranty

Nooo! Leave the Dragon be as it is!! Just kidding, it's yours bud, do as you please. I personally do not like heat anodized titanium.

I said yes as you will probably have the only one with that kinda flare. Also perhaps if decided you didn't want it anymore or thought it easier to sell then you could coat the thing with cerakote black or another color they have, like that bladehq hinderer.

Thanks for the compliment Ray, and yes I do "clicky pen" my knives. LOL!

The lock started out REALLY early, and soon settled in at 50%. Then slowly traveled to about 75% where it has remained, and seems very solid, even with a lot, and I mean a lot, of "clicky pen" action.

How is yours, or anyone else's, behaving?

the iron dragon i have is second hand and when i got it the detend was hitting the g10 scale as the lock was so far over. After taking it apart and adjusting the lock insert its at 50% and has stayed there for a while now. Yes i play with it like a 3 year old boy with a new tonka toy..lol!

Good to know.

That is such a cool knife; I wouldn't anodize it, but that is just me; I voted no by the way. An option would be to do it with a power supply, that way you can reverse it any time or do some designs on it by using nail polish and different voltages, but I don't have any experience doing that so I don't really know what I'm talking about. I thought about getting into anodizing at one point in time but money is always the problem, and when I have some, I buy knives, :) Still, it is your knife and you can do whatever you want with it; maybe if you can get another one and play with it, and keep one stock. I know they are hard to find, and they are also expensive!
I like what you have done with the ones in the pictures, the ZT452 looks very cool.

You can also put together some 9 volt dc batteries together up to 110 or 120 volts and use a couple of leads with one attached to copper wire in a sprite pop solution and the other positive attached to the titanium piece to anodize. You can watch it bubble and change. You can find this on you-tube. Works pretty well and you do not have to worry about tempering the metal. Just some info.
