Should I pull the trigger and buy a Becker BK9?

I've been eyeing this knife for a while and I'm on the edge of buying it. Any thoughts from owners or those who have experience with the knife? Also is the sheath it comes with decent or is it worth it to buy an aftermarket kydex or leather sheath? Thanks in advance!

Edit: thanks everybody for the input! Just bought it today!

I had one a while back, though I don't any more. It's a very solid knife, I just found it a bit too heavy to carry while backpacking, and I prefer my CS Gurkha Kukri for wood processing while car camping. If it intrigues you I'd say go ahead and pull the trigger.

I thought the stock sheath was adequate, but I know a lot of people aren't fans. YMMV.

It is called the King for a reason. Sheath is ok but not great. A lot of knife for the money. I love mine. Go the the Becker sub forum and you will see the kind of emotional response this knife generates.

The sheath is decent, nothing t ride home about.
The bk9 is 1 hell of a chopper.makes feather stocks. 1 word of ,advise get some inner tube and put it on the handle. When it gets wet you'll be glad u have it. Phil

Yes you should
If your looking for a chopper that can do other knife duties at a reasonable low price you won't be disappointed
The sheath will do but I always get aftermarket kydex or custom Leather for my beckers
You will probably change the handles/scales for Macarta or wood a lot of guys do including me
But thats just a personal thing, even if by chance you don't like it they are very easy to resell without much loss.

You seem to have the go ahead to get the 9
Like Kershaws sometimes a hatchet is better but as unwieldy and heavier the the 9
Strictly Chopping a eese Junglas might be a better option albeit twice the price.
But in essence you will find very very few who bought the bk9 tell you they regret the purchase.

I'm a bit biased, but yes buy a 9! You really won't believe how great it is until you get one. Swing by the Becker subforum, we'll show you the light.

Get one. The sheath does exactly what it is designed to do - adequately case and transport your knife. If you prefer leather or kydex, there are many that will make you a great after market sheath without robbing you blind.

Yes! If you require a dedicated chopper.
Meaning it does it exceedingly well with well placed vertical downward strokes.
Horizontal swings could get challenging for a marathon duration.
So get a Bk 7 too if you require a livelier general purpose knife.

From my point of view, we all have to get "the cool" out of our knife buying and choosing. But then, it's all about fun. I still buy cool. Get the BK-9. Most of my big knives just sit in a Rubbermaid tub, but the short machetes do get used a fair amount. It is a cool knife, pretty functional for a knife this size, and cost/value effective.

Well Beckers have a many decades old reputation for dependability and toughness. And the big knife debate has to be decided by and for yourself. Some say an axe or hatchet and a smaller knife. Others just want to pack one tool for multiple uses, and or just like big blades. I understand those views as I can go to those different places whenever the mood strikes,... or if I want to keep it simple. Personally, I have never owned a 9 but I had four other Becker's at one time. These are great tools to take out to the bush. However, walking around a vacation park with kids and families etc. may give the heeby Jeebies to some folk. The 9 is like a short sword.

I already have a smaller knife (Esee 4) so I needed something a little heavier for chopping.

Yes. And yes, you should get an aftermarket sheath. I love Beckers, but have been disappointed with every single one of their sheaths.

Well there you go! Use the 9 for your big whomper, and the Esee 4 for everything else. It's a pretty flawless setup IMO.
