Should I Return This?

Hello. I recently ordered a CRKT M21-14SF. I like the knife's operation and handling. However... It arrived in-box with a defect in the blade.

Here it is:

And here's close-up of the affected area:

Looks like someone when hacking at something hard with it. Anyway, do you think I should return this for a replacement?

If it's just a user those chips will sharpen out pretty easily. Wouldn't be unreasonable at all to ask for a replacement though. Your call.

In that price range, I'd probably just take the 15 minutes or so to sharpen it out rather than dealing with the return hassle. That's just me though.

Its a CRKT. In my experience, stuff like that kinda comes with the territory. Good luck. The M16 I had (have, not sure anymore) chipped like that within a week of using it.

That looks easy enough to get out if you did it.
But there's no excuse for that on a brand new knife you just bought.
Absolutely definitely return it and get it replaced.

Thanks for the responses. I feel good with myself for asking for a new one.

This is basically what I needed to hear. I bought it on Amazon, and I'm a Prime member. They'll send me a new one with two-day guaranteed shipping, and I have a whole month to send the old one (for free) back to them.

My thinking is that if you went and made a thread to ask others about it, it obviously bothered you, which means sending it back is the right choice. I agree that on a new knife I don't want to see something like that, whether I paid $10 or $100. Hopefully the next one will be better.

Return it and get your money back. There is no reason any new knife should have that issue out of the box. I'm really wary of Chinese CRKT's. It tends to be a crap shoot. You mighbt get a good one, you might not. Taiwanese CRKT's tends to be of better quality overall. Granted, China-made CRKT's are cheap (cheap as in affordable), but in my experience their quality and fit/finish is lacking.

I received a Spyderco that had very small chips like that in the edge.

I just sharpened them out with a DMT dia-fold.

If you don't have the ability or desire (and either one is just fine, not an indictment) then you can send it back and go that route.

You should not have to sharpen a new knife, but surely it is part of the fun of owning and using knives to sharpen them.

If the knife were purchased to be a collectible showpiece and not a user, then send it back for sure.

If you paid for a normal, factory knife, there is no reason to get a B grade blade.

While it's true that it could be fixed pretty easily, consider if you were at a store counter and examining the knife
you saw this. Wouldn't everybody tell the guy to bring out a different one?
No different if you order online.

I echo what everyone else has been saying. Whether or not you feel comfortable/know how to sharpen your own knives is irrelevant since you bought it new and right out of the box it had a gouge in the edge. Like KenHash said if you were buying it in the store you'd want a different knife of the same model.
