New guy, and knife newbie. I was looking around on eBay and Amazon when I found this...

<active ebay auction link removed>

What do you guys think? Is it worth picking up? I have no idea how the steel is (though google said it's a super steel), or how kydex compares to leather. It has a g10 handle, how does that hold up? Any help or suggestions you guys can offer is welcome.

Sorry..you can't link to an active ebay auction. I removed the link. The knife in question is a Todd Begg Boker Ginger Fighter.

@Morrow
Oh, sorry, I didn't know.

@9blades
I like the look of the Becker, but I don't really know which to get. Suggestions?

It's ok but in that price range a I'd look at a Becker bk2 or a esee 4

Both of which are Borrrring! The Ginger fighter in contrast, is a very cool design and comes with a kydex sheath. I'd go for the Ginger Fighter and one day I will.

There not the coolest but they've proven to be very useful and have known steel.

personally, i would never pay over a hundo for any knife with 440 c blade steel. call me a knife snob but there are sooooo many better options with better steel for the same price. find something in 1095, those are just as cheep but way better toughness and edge retention. ittle rust maybe but cmon, 440? join the ranks of the steel snobs and just say no. if you want a totaly decent tactical/fighting knife thats capable of survival tasks, get a Ontario SPEC PLUS SP6, its good steel, full tang, and its going to have way better ergos than that boker. trust me

You may be talking about the one I've got up. Not gonna list it, since that's an obvious no-no, but I'm considering a gold account here, so I may list it if I do.

Anyway, it's a great knife. G10 is an awesome scale material. Gives a good, solid grip. Kydex is spectacular, by far the best sheath material, though some of our older posters may bring up the leather argument. Kydex is very durable, and if the sheath's made well, the knife isn't coming out unless you want it to. I've slept with a Kydex sheath on my belt when I've been camping, and it's held up to me laying on it.

Now, for the steel. 440c isn't ideal for many knives. For example, it's not really suitable for utility blades that are primarily used for cutting. The edge will die much too quickly. But, let's remember that this is marketed as a fighting knife. Both the steel and it's ability to hold an edge are more than suitable for that application. I'd recommend that anybody needing a single purpose fighting blade pick this up, even for the hundred dollar price tag. And if you can find it cheaper, you'd be insane not to grab it. It blows any other fighter I can think of out of the water. The jimping on the thumb ramp is aggressive, the choke up is superb, the ergonomics are perfect for a fighter, it has a great length, and the modified clip point paired with the one and a half inch wide blade is gonna inflict some extremely serious stab wounds when used on a *ahem* theoretical zombie attacker.
