Should I strip one? What will I find?

I really have the urge to stip one of my ESEE's. What am I going to find under there? Will I need to do some refinishing (I don't mind the "stonewashed" or bead blasted look)? Will regular, heavy duty paint stripper do the job?

There is just something about that look of steel. I have made a few leather sheaths for my ESEEs and whichever one I stip would ride in leather for a more traditional look.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Have a look at this thread...

It highlights how I achieved this look on my Junglas...

The steel is not polished by any means under the coating. If you want to put a mirror finish or a satin finish on it, you could, and some do. Otherwise, if you want to let it patina, you can leave it as is and let it happen naturally, or you can force a patina like I demonstrate in the above mentioned thread. Paint stripper will take the coating off in minutes. It needs a little push sometimes by using a non-metal scraping tool (using a metal one will obviously scratch the bare metal), but I got all the coating off of my Junglas and my Izula in under thirty minutes each time.

I love the bare metal look on my user ESEE's... It's like the knife is just screaming for a thrashing.

I use Klean Strip paint stripper, available everywhere. Coat the blade, wrap it in tin foil, wait 20 minutes or so and there you go. The finish will just wipe off. I'd wait until the finish is on its last leg though, but that's just me.

Here is a pic of the much "loved" Pass Around ESEE-5 after I stripped it and put on a patina. I stuck the tip in a board and wiped the blade up and down with white vinegar, trying to make it as even as possible.

I love this picture....

If you strip it, I would recommend putting in some elbow grease and getting the sandblasted finish off.

Sandblasted carbon steel will rust like the dickens due to the micro pitting holding onto moisture. A well sanded and patina'ed finish will repel rust much better.

Good Info ^^^

the last knife I stripped was a BK7, I'm guessing the epoxy/paint used by Esee and Becker are almost the same.

I also use Klean Strip paint remover, after removing the paint I just hit it with sand paper starting with 400grain to 2500grain.

If you want a mirror finish you will need a way to buff the blade, but you can get close with sand paper.

if you want to patina your blade you can use mustard, vinegar, horseradish or fruits and vegtables.

I actually just put mine in some stripper earlier. I wiped it on the blade with a brush and put it in a bag. Came back after about 45 minutes and no effect. So I dumped a bunch of stripper in the bag and got it soaked. Now Im playing the waiting game.

What kind of stripper are you using?

You almost need a epoxy/paint remover, 45 mins should show somthing happening....
