Everyone should unplug before midnight and not plug back in for a week or so.......

All that juicy bandwidth will be all MINE MINE MINE!!!!

Power surge? Possible. Should have some protection agains that. Otherwise, what's the point? Update your virus software today, and surf through the evening in style!

I'll be posting here if I am still able (hic) to......

Brandon

I don't think there would be serious problem. Anyway, below is what my ISP said.

I'll not be online, just because I want to watch that stupid ball.

We all will survive the Y2K for sure. How boring...

I am expecting power fluctuation due to the chemical plants going off-line at 2330 and then coming back on-line at 0030. Since I live with in 5 miles of the major group a plants, I might just have a few problems. I think it's just as smart as unplugging a computer in a thunder storm.

I wouldn't. It's New Years already in Japan, Australia and Europe and they report NO major problems.

Happy New Year all!

I know better than to accept that time table, it takes several hours to bring these things down and then back up. Yeah they'll be shuting down(already are) but not all at once, same with coming back up.
I'll still unplug to protect my money and more imprtantly my time(I built this system, and will build my next) So my power switch gets an extra cycle, big deal.

I ran a Y2k program I downloaded from CNet....it said my system was ok BUT I might have clock problems if my PC was ON at rollover. So I shut down before midnight and back on later (when the beer wore off and I woke up).
No problems here in Oz.
I would recommend shutting down for the few minutes.....can't hurt.
And, BTW, when is the auction for all that survival gear bought in recent times ? It is gonna be CHEAP.

Well, it's 02:00 here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil... I've been online since midnight, and so far nothing has happened.
I think there's nothing to worry about.

Regards,

Leo Daher

PS: Who knows, now that the Y2K scare is over, we could devote more time and energy to the fight for our eroding individual rights...

Not quite over yet Leo. About 26 minutes to go over here. See all you people in the AM. Happy New Year!!

L8r (not much later I hope!),
Nakanoooooooo...

Leo

I think the point is that there are different systems with different "use by" dates. No one can say : "I was ok so everyone else will be"....well, they can SAY it

Shutting down for a few moments ain't gonna cause any problems but staying on MIGHT.

Sorry, Leo
It's just that we all have an (unofficial) duty of care not to give advice that might lead to harm.
Maybe your advice turned out fine and mine was wrong......but mine wouldn't have cost anybody a new hard drive.
Luck of the draw, eh ?

Well, all is fine over here. I did unplug for about 2 hours. Don' t know if it helped but it apparently didn' t hurt! Happy New Year all!

Ok, Brian, I see your point.

Besides, I have to concede that my knowledge of computer-related stuff is marginal at best...

My advice (more of a comment, really) was probably prompted by the fact that I never really bought the whole Y2K threat thing...

Looking back, I believe you're right.

Leo Daher

Me too, Leo.
The only precaution I took was to shut down my PC.
Shows what my priorities are, I suppose

What's funny si the fact that I did not follow my own advice. I tried a little too hard to live up to my Hoard nickname and just plain forgot to bring it down, oh well, no harm done
