I've been looking over the site, and some things you just don't notice until someone points them out to you.

We've got a category at the top called Makers / Mfgrs, but it's really pretty much Manufacturers.

It's also been brought up that we'd do well to have a sheath making / materials forum, a forging forum, a knife materials forum, etc.

Now, Shop Talk is one of the most popular forums here. But, I have to wonder if we'd be better served by having some more diversification in the topics and such.

What do you guys think?

shop talk seems to work fine for us stock removal makers and most forgers. i have seen some snotty type replys from a couple of forgers. but for the most part they are very willing to share. which is good because all the info is related.and interesting. a place for leather work does sound like a very good idea.

I too like it the way it is. If we had a dozen different forums I'd have to check them all to see if there was anything worth reading. The way it is, I can just come here and scan the handful of new topics every day.

Kind of like it the way it is. Its sort of like hanging out on Saturday in the shop as others drop by during the day.

Some technical stuff, show and tell, questions of others and so on.

I hate to think I would have to visit several forums for all the related material and would probably visit less often if I had to wait for various forums to accumulate enough posts to make it worthwhile.

If you are serious about a special topic, the search function works fine to just focus on something.

My $.02.............

I think there's about enough happening here to fill a single forum. However, ;) , a sheath/leather forum would be of great interest to me and might stimulate more discussion than we see in Shop Talk about it.

What's great about the current setup is that I often end up reading about topics that I would not ordinarily have been interested in and then I learn something. It just takes too much effort to wade through forum after forum trying to catch up on all the topics. Also, it is a web phenomena that if a forum has only one or two posts every couple of days then it appears dead to visitors and they tend to not come back.

I also really like the fact that despite the (apparently) minimal intervention on the part of the moderators there is rarely any flaming or trolling happening here. I guess for the most part troublemakers stay away from the technical side of things and that's fine by me. We have a precious little oasis here, let's not screw it up!

I like it the way it is. Have been making knives for only two years and have learned much about different topics. My mentor recently passed on so I depend on this information greatly now to take his place. Thanks!!

For my part I like it the way it is, dont make more work for yourself than you have to :D...

It's a nice mix of topics and new information...Personally I feel right at home here...

Seems to me we had this conversation a couple of months back and the overwhelming consenus was LEAVE THE DAMN THING ALONE.
This is begining to resemble a Quebec referendum. If you don't like the answer you got wait a while, re-word the question, & slip it in again.

Sheaths should have their own section. Leather and Kydex/Concealex working is so specialized that it should be warrented. I think there are enough of us here that are seriuos enough about our sheaths to keep it moving.

I think Normark and Helmar(?) would be great moderators. One for each material.

You gotta be kiddin, over 400 forumites have checked this thread out and only 55 of em bothered to vote?????????????
