Should the Mods lead by example?

I've noticed when a member posts a live link to a fake knife to try to show what is going on, they get deleted and a warning. Yet the mods do it and yes this is a live eBay auction. Easy enough to see this and think, a mod did it, so it's okay.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to share what I've found...A lot of Southards popping up in the exchange section...be careful...these seem spot on.....

(( not a paid BF Dealer ))
:barf:

I don't see why it should be locked. It's a legitimate question. Both threads are about fake knives

Actually, Mermaniel's was about an unpaid dealer site, not an auction site.

The live auction post was in a Spyderco forum thread "The best fake by far" and like Bernard Levine's, we have allowed live auction examples.

Do you know of any mods using posts like that to advertise or popularize a sale?

I know it's against the rules to post a link to a live auction, I've seen the matter addressed many times, by the mods over the years. But, if it's allowed at times that was what I was asking and if members are allowed to do so, in certain threads too, then that is entirely fair. Thank you for the clarification.

IMO our Mods do a great job of leading by example.

The thread in the Spyderco forum has been there for a good while now. rycen is very good at spotting these fakes.

That's great, I just never knew there are threads in which we are allowed to link, live auctions, for the purpose of counterfeit identification. Good information to have, as I often see questionable knives on eBay and this makes identification much easier.

That thread is good to have, but be careful over there Jill. I often can't tell the difference between the real and fake Spyderco's on ebay anymore.
They're getting scary good at it.
I'm sure you know to only buy from the sellers you trust though.

I just check Aliexpress and if it's not on there, I figure they haven't got around to copying it yet. That is if I can't find it from a direct to manufacturer dealer and have to resort to eBay.

I started the thread in the SPyderco forum, and requested it get sticky'd to prevent confusion and allow discussion. When we see these things popping up all over the place with liks that appear to the individual mod like it's more for advertising than for education. The most common ones I see are people wanting to buy a NIB Sebenza for half the price. The fact is, you can get them used, for lower than retail, but a NIB will never sell for $200, or less. Especially if the country shipping it is overseas. Each mod has their own personality and style, what seems like blatant deal spotting to one, may seem like harmless discussion to another. What to do....

No, that's not what we allow linking for, and if you make a practice of it, it's back to the warnings. Calling attention to an eBay auction for buying/selling purposes is still a violation. As a teaching moment, perhaps. But we aren't going to allow ambiguous violations all around the forums.

That's exactly the unpaid dealer I deleted in the original post. eBay is also on it's own, not authorized for linking or recommending.

Resort to the Exchange and you won't have to worry about warnings and infractions.

I meant are we allowed to in the threads about faked knives? I realize we cannot all over the forums.

I suppose that really comes down to the manufacturer for example CRK does not want fakes to be discussed and would prefer you contact them directly.
