Should used price be a certain % of new price?

Assuming demand for a custom makers knives are not increasing strongly, but more or less holding constant, what would expect both as a buyer and seller the be a reasonable transaction price for a used (also assume good ro very good condition) knife for that maker?

I'm asking because I believe I underestimated how much the "used" mark down would be.

As an example, I expect to see at least a 20% to 30% discount for a used sebenza.

Hi Dave,

Too many assumptions and not enough facts. Which maker, which knife how "used". What levels of use do you think justify what percentag? Used?

1) Carried in pocket scratch on clip....Used.

2) Knife has been used to dress out 3 deer during hunting season....Used.

3) Knife carried and used for 3 years and even sending it back to the maker would not get it any where back to its original condition....Used.

Lots of used.

Also, with your reference to the Sebenza you are using a factory knife for comparison. You are seeking an answer while comparing apples to oranges.

It would help if you would try and narrow your focus and provide facts.

You don't indicate if the knife has been sharpened. If it's used and sharpened, you've only dropped the price 20%. If it was me, for $50 more I'd get it spankin new from the maker. Also, don't discount phsychological price points, like $200. I'd bet it'd go for $175 if it got positive reviews in the pass around forum and wasn't sharpened much. Were the reviews positive?

brownshoe, that's a good point, I'm sure it was sharpened, all the reviews where positive but I can 200 being a psychological parice barrier.

Used knife = 50-70% of original value. At best. Rough estimate, but that seems to be where the cards fall. A good reason I make sure many of the knives I purchase stay 'mint'.
