I've tradionally carried a S&W 3" 38spl. while fishing in a belt holster. I just bought be a pair of hip waders for use in a nearby lake. I typically wear a fishing vest. So, my idea is to buy a quality shoulder holster for use while fishing since I rarely wade in over my waste anyway.

Any ideas on this??

(Before anyone wonders, I always carry a revolver when fishing/hiking... first two rounds are bird shot, the rest lead... you know, for critters!!)

I have one- not name brand or anything but it is made out of ballistic nylon which I would reccomend over leather in a marine envirnment. jmho

If you are not worried about concealability a Army Tanker style shoulder holster works quite well over clothing.

How fast do you want to draw? I think the Blackhawk SERPA holsters might have a model for your pistol (revolvers aren't a popular item with these kind of manufacturers so I'm not positive). SERPAs can be mounted in a shoulder rig, hip, etc. A bit expensive but a lot of folks swear by them. Definitely go with nylon, leather looks nice but it can hold moisture, warp, and just be a PITA.

my bud who lives in palmer alaska wears a shoulder holster when fly fishing, carries a freedom arms .454 casull, for bear, he's in a wheelchair so aint no running for him, lol, hopefully he wont ever need to see if thats enough gun, i am sure it'll be better than a knife/spray/etc.

I've done a couple thousand miles of river trips in Alaska and Northern Canada. In AK, I often carry a stainless revolver to backup my 12 ga. shotgun. I wear it outside my chest waders on a separate gunbelt, mounted above waist level. However, one of my partners uses a holster under his left shoulder (inside his chest waders) and it seems to work fine for him. The one time we were charged at close range, he managed to clear the holster a lot more quickly than I thought he would be able to.

I would go with a knydex or similar molded plastic myself if you can find one, if the padded nylon gets wet it will stay wet and hold the moisture next to your gun which could be a problem unless its stainless, knydex is hydrophobic and nonporous so it would be no maintainance.

Just a question, have you thought about taking an inexpensive fabric holster, like an Uncle Mikes, and sewing it directly onto your fishing vest?

If you are set on a shoulder holster, I would second the recomendation that you use fabric, not leather. I have an older Galco Blackwidow shoulder rig that I have been happy with for about 20 years. I'm not sure that they make that particular model anymore, but I'm sure that they will have something. Kinda pricey, but high quality. I often see generic brand holsters at gun shows for a very reasonable price, but I can not comment on their quality...

A couple of rounds of .454 in a "roughly-beary" direction should provide enough recoil impulse to roll him out of danger, even if he misses!
