Just wanted to thank Chris of Shenipsit Forge. He hooked me up with a really cool vise today. Last year at Ashokan he overheard me say I would like to get my hands on a graver ball style vise. He said "I got one you can have".
Luck would have it he had some business out my way and we made plans for a shop visit. He said it came from one of the master engravers at Winchester.
Thanks again Chris!!!:D

Excellent snag Mace

I'm in the process of getting my wife set-up for engraving and a Ball Vise is one of the "missing links", that, and a good microscope.

The vise should clean up beautifully.

I'll bet it's a heavy little bugger :)

What the heck is that stuff that needs to be cleaned off ? Almost looks like creosote.
Was she stored in a deep, dark, damp corner or what ?

I haven't seen a mess like that since my dad once tried to get rid of a chew through a closed pickup window!

When you get it cleaned up, if you want a cheap and convenient dust cover, try using the 80 oz plastic cookie dough tub that Nestle packs their product it.

Mace,

You're quite welcome. That cleaned up pretty well (much better than I thought it would). I was able to clean up the threads on a couple of vises by taking them apart and holding them against a wire wheel. Be sure to wear old clothes if you try it. When it's all done, you just have to crank out some fancy engravings!

Just a correction, I believe the former owner was actually a master engraver for Colt, not Winchester. (I don't want to get haunted.)

By the way, I had a nice visit at Mace's shop, after I finally got past all of the attack ducks and geese. However, I must admit that I was a little uncomfortable with all of the pictures of Matt Gregory that he has posted everywhere...

However, I must admit that I was a little uncomfortable with all of the sexy pictures of Matt Gregory and Mike Spangler in all kinds of questionable poses that he has posted everywhere... as well as the Burt Foster shrine, complete with a Burt Foster hairdoll he has been assembling from Ashokan drainclogs:eek:

WOW, that sounds creepy :D

Dont forget the cookie dough voo-doo doll of Sam that I like to pinch with hot tongs!!!

P.S. Sam, Nice job with that "quote"!;)
