I know the porch is full of generous people (being the winner of a GAW and all), but Ive kind-of been blown away here.
First, I bought a 57 whittler from another member for less than he was planning on listing it for after he PMed me with an offer to sell it to me, knowing that I love these knives.
A couple of days later, my wife got into a car accident after leaving work early to see her mother who was admitted into the hospital. My wife is fine, and my mother in law is home now, but my wifes car was toast. It happened to be the same day I received the 57 in the mail.
Suddenly in the position of needing to come up with a down payment (fast), I opened the 57, listed it for enough to recoup my money, and listed my 38 Grinling Whittler and 62 Courthouse Whittler on the exchange. (Prior to this, I never dreamed of selling either)
2 out of 3 of the buyers from my listing, after learning of the reason for selling my knives, sent more money to my Paypal than what I was asking for, which was already what I would consider to be on the high side.
I was overcome with gratitude- it was kind of a huge deal that people who have never met me would be willing to extend themselves in this way. Obviously, I was thrilled that my wife was unharmed and that my knives sold immediately and for a generous amount. Still, I was a little bummed that my slipjoint collection fell to two knives overnight.
As I was packing up the knives to ship them to their new owners, I decided to reuse some of the sales fliers that the member who sold me the 57 used for packaging. When I started to remove the paper, I noticed a little box at the bottom of the package- I had been sent a gift with the 57, and in my haste to come up with some cash, I had completely missed it!
It was a Henckels whittler. A great little user, thats now riding in my pocket. Its not quite the quality of a GEC, but the meaning attached to this knife, and the ability it had to turn my day around, instantly made it one of my favorites.
This really is a place filled with wonderful people- a rarity on the internet!
Stephen, John, Adam & Andrew, you guys all rock.
