Shovel?

Hi, all,

I'm looking to buy a good shovel to use for yard work or maybe to carry in the truck. I've been researching the CS SF Shovel but have gotten mixed opinions about it. Is it good enough for semi-heavy yardwork(mostly digging, light chopping, and, just for fun, throwing)? What else would you recommend? I'd prefer something I can get at the army surplus as there are no good knifeshops around here :( . Which is the best out of the many surplus shovels? I may get two, one for the yard and one to throw in the truck and forget about. Thanks for your time and patience!

For use in the yard/garden go to your local hardware store & get a long handled shovel (easier on the back). My truck shovel is a CS, it's handy & doesn't take up much room. As far as folding shovels etc. I have found that anything with more than two parts is more prone to breakage. YMMV but if anything is breakable I'll end up breaking it and usually when I need it the most. :D

I was leaning toward the CS because I'll be on my knees most of the time. The ability to use it as a hatchet is also a good plus so I won't have to buy one(less money to spend). Thanks.

you can get the bad axe head, the shovel head, and one handle so you can switch them. then axe and shovel!

Diamond,

I've had a CS SF shovel for over 6 year and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a hard use shovel of this size. I have used mine heavily in the yard digging and chopping big roots I've put a lot of pressure on the thing and no noticable damage. As far as throwing it I've only done it once when I smashed my hand........ Anyway I think it is well worth owning and using. Just my $.02 worth.

Thanks for the help, guys! I'm going with the CS. How is the Bad Axe? Does it have the same rep as the 'hawks?

Where's a good place to buy these shovels? SMKW has 'em for 15.99 but they're out of stock :( . Thanks.

the bad axe is more better made than the hawks, and is heavy, and large blade. good for throwing i would think.

Thanks! Is this site reputable?

UO is where I got my CS shovel and sheath, and a number of other items at various times. I've always had good luck with them. Might try running the name thru GB&U, to see if you get any hits.

I have used a Cold Steel shovel, didn't like it much at first, but it grew on me after awhile. Throwing can be problematic as replacing the broken handle is a lot more difficult than with a tomohawk. Much more information can be seen in the review.

I just sharpened my CS shovel on a grinder and then took the ceramic rod to the edge for a total of about an hour. I'm not gonna get a shave-sharp edge, but the hour's work let me chop a 2x4 in about 5 minute's time. It's too light to be a great chopper and it tends to twist in the hand, but the edge stayed true and it performed better than a knife.

You can't go wrong for about fifteen bucks.
