Fall and winter always make me think of when i first became a member here and found out what Scandi (grind) knives were. With that in mind, let's see em and if you have a story about it (if u made it, good deal trade etc) let's hear about it too. I will admit this is my only scandi at the moment. I had a brusletto nansen that i traded w/ jeffs1 here on the boards and will get another one soon as i really liked that knife.

Excuse the horrid cell pic

Here's a pocket one Brian Andrews made D2 and then an 01 Koster Blank that I put birch scales on. I really loved the knife Tony Designed and Brian made but wanted a pocket scandi so I had a smaller version made by Brian.

Here is one I made from a Lauri 95 Progressive Tempered blade , some white leather and red fiber spacer and micarta Always wondered why nobody did scandis in micarta.

D2 Scandi Skifa from Charlie May. This one is not as good for bushcraft extended cutting due to the handle being blocky but is a favorite because it is very nimble and stain resistant.

Here's a Muskrat Man Fulltang Pukko I had him put a straight handle on. This is a great shape but not sure if it his tempering or L6 is not suitable for scandi but I had to convex it slightly to keep it from chipping. Anyway it doesn't get used much because it gets dull to fast

Here are 2 by Mark Wohlwend.

I sent him the pattern and wood for both. The smaller one is outstanding. The larger one apparently he had trouble getting the two sides of the grind to meet up or something and it had a secondary v grind. Gradually I'm removing it and have it down to a fine convex and hopefully with eventual continued sharpening will go down to a full scandi like the other. Both are 1/8" 01 and feel and cut great.

Another shot of the smaller one

Here is a nice one using 01 and Camel Bone and Mosaic Pins made by Shing in the UK. I did the handle. This one is a short handled one and my wifes.

Here is a larger one by Shing. Inspired by Fiddlebacks multi layer handles the handle is made of HEMP micarta made by Shadetree Phenolics over some G10
01 steel and 1/8" blade.

This one is a favorite the Skookum Bush Tool. I ordere one as soon as I saw Schwert's review on the old Outdoors Magazine website and the wait was only 5 weeks and price 150. This is one I'd always keep.

Beside it is a little digging stick I whittled to dig up some ramps for dinner on a backpacking trip in the Tea Creek Back Country.

This is another I'd never part with the original design 3v Koster. When I got mine the scales were way too THIN. So since he was still doing the run I asked Dan if I could send him some 3/8 thick scales and have him send me one glued up so I could shape it to fit my hand.

I love this knife. It fits my hand so well and is also so compact. I don't like a huge blade hanging off my hip. Too Greenhorney. The only thing I'd change would be to make it 1/8" it's slightly thicker.
koster1bh8.jpg

I like the top of the handle to be wide and flat not too rounded so the backward force cutting something hard is widely distributed.
koster4kj3.jpg

I like the part where your fingers curve around to be thinner and more rounded to sort of seat the handle in the bends of your knuckles

Here is another fave: This is another Shing I did in Ironwood. This knife is like 4.5mm thick so it's a little too thick and big for my taste but with the long bevel it cuts great. I usually don't take it out though cause it's a little oversize.

wow.. great looking knives HD...

i myself have never been much of a scandi knife, kind of guy, though i am slowly turning to the dark side and am trying to figure out which one i should get...:o

I like convex too. Depends on what you are using it for.

Anothe shot of the Brian Andrews one. I'd rank his stuff right up there with Charles May as far as being neat and clean. Charles beats him still on total eveness of the grind but Brian wins on good handles.

Edge chipping on the Muskrat Man knife. I was really dissapointed with the tempering on this one. maybe it's just too thin. I think the blade is less than 1/8 but the angle is even lower than most 1/8" ones. Also notice that the two sides of the grind do not meet up by the ricasso. That part is not chipping. I've since sharpened the two sides together.

Beautiful blade though:

Here's one I just finished a couple days ago but I guess it doesn't qualify as a true scandi if it has a micro convex edge.. I still like it though:o

Ray, I really dig the handle on that one - nice stuff.

Here are a few scandi shots.

This is my nameless EDC scandi (I'm sure you guys are getting tired of seeing pics of this one!). A little over a year ago, I decided that I wanted a useful EDC fixed blade that could handle basic cutting tasks as well as carving and fire prep tasks. After looking around for a while, I came across cheapo 'Cobbler's blades' on Ragweed Forge. These are straight-backed, scandi-ground carbon steel blades with unpolished edges and unfinished (plain ol' rectangle) handles. I ordered a few, and one of them - after extensive modifications - became my EDC scandi. It has a slightly dropped point, padauk scales, and pins made from nails. I re-ground the edge (finishing it with water stones), added thumb notches, and contoured the handle. This knife became the centrepiece of my six-month Nessmuk Challenge, during which it saw loads of daily use. It is still my EDC blade.

Here's a shot of my EDC blade alongside a knife I made using a Mora blade. It has a maple handle with chechen and padauk spacers. It's a heck of a slicer.

Resistance is Futile!!! Come to the dark side...

I fell in love with the scandi grind, and plain carbon steel with my very first, the Mora #510. I made a stitchless sheath for it, 'cause I hated that plastic turd it came in.

Since then, I've re-handled a few Moras, and even made a scandi from scratch. The first one is my current user, the second is the one I made from scratch, and the others are more Mora re-handles that I either sold or are sitting in a box.

Here is my baby a Stewart Marsh Bushcrafter with antique ivory Micarta handles. After handling dozens of bushies over the years I still come back to this one.

Mentor. Who makes that Cobblers blade? I went to Ragweed forge and could not find one. I like that knife a lot.

dipbait - Thanks! Ragnar hasn't had them in stock for several months now, unfortunately. When he did, I believe they were under the Mora section in the blades and blanks area of the site. He has agreed to email me if and when he gets more in stock, as I'm keen to work on some new knives. If they become available, I'll figure out some way to let people know.

Here's a before shot:

And here are two more knives I based on cobbler's blades:
