I've not been able to get these off my mind (I think it's some residual HIKV creeping back up:o. In general, I'm looking for the most chopping potential in the most compact size. My limited experience tells me that'd be somewhere in the 13"-14" arena. Any thoughts/tips from the experts? Many thanks.

I'm not an expert, but here's what I do know: The heavy chopper models (AK, Bonecutter, Ganga Ram and a few others) usually come in larger sizes than you are looking for, though you might get lucky. I would send Yangdu an email and ask if she has one of those in the 13"-14" range.

However, there are a couple of HI models that might fit your need for a compact chopper: the BDC and the Pen Knife. Both are very robust and come in shorter lengths. Here are some examples:

BDC by Bura Kami, 14" OAL, 17.5oz:

Pen Knife by Lachhu Kami, 15" OAL, 18oz:

Pen Knife by Kumar Kami, 12.5" OAL, 18oz:

I didn't 'get' the BDC, and now I see that BDC by Bura and ... it's gorgeous! Now I understand the BDC, it's magnificent. Too bad nobody will ever let go of one! :)

Somebody let go of one. I wasn't born with mine. :)

More important, new ones are being made -- by Lacchu Kami, who trained with Bura, if I remember correctly. They might not be as perfect as some of Bura's work, but they are beautiful in their own right, and completely functional. Yangdu posts one of them as a DOTD now and then. You can also email her to see if she happens to have one available. If she sees that the demand is there, she might ask the kamis to make some when they can.

By the way, it's been pointed out that a BDC in many ways is like a miniature M43, so if you want something smaller and easler to carry that still can chop, the BDC is a good choice.

I've been eyeballing the M43 as well so thanks for making that connection in my mind. This is a great post, good perspective, information, and all good things

This is my 12 inch 16 ounce BDC by Lachhu. Horn handle.

I really like it!

Here's my set of custom lightweight Kitchen BDCs by Lachhu

And this is my 12" 16oz BDC by Kumar. It's among my favorites for day hikes and the like. It chops almost if not as well as a light KLVUK, great for cutting up meats and softer foods, and alright with things like carrots and potatoes. I carry it in the kydex sheath I made, which can be worn standalone or inside this other sheath.
