As much as I love a fully dressed blade, I've always had a soft spot for full tang knives. They're simple, but highly effective and dependable designs that can remain fully functional even after the handle material is degraded, weakened, or lost due to heavy use or extreme environmental conditions. There's a lot to be said for that.
So let's not let these little workhorses get overshadowed by their fancy stick-tang cousins - sometimes it's just better to hang out with your tang out! Come join me, you may just find it incredibly liberating
I'll start with this damascus and ironwood hunter I delivered to a very happy customer just yesterday.
The blade on this one is 1084 / 15n20 damascus, the handle is a really nice piece of Arizona desert ironwood burl, and the pins and lanyard tube are stainless steel.
I left the tang a bit proud of the handle scales to both highlight the damascus pattern and improve tactile response. Though this little detail requires a lot more close finish work to do properly, I feel that it looks good and feels nice in the hand as well.
So let me hear your comments, and better yet, post some of your favorite full tang knives!
